A day-by-day look at how roofing crews prepare, remove old materials, install new systems and clean up properties.
Replacing a roof can sound disruptive, but many residential projects are completed in one to three days. The schedule depends on the roof’s size and complexity, weather, material type and whether crews uncover structural damage. This article by KPost Company details what homeowners can expect when their roof is replaced. Before installation, the contractor inspects the existing roof, discusses material options and schedules the project. Materials may arrive one or two days before work begins. Homeowners can prepare by moving vehicles, securing outdoor furniture, removing fragile wall decorations, covering attic
valuables and keeping pets safely indoors.
Day one typically begins with protecting landscaping, siding, windows and nearby surfaces. The crew then removes the existing shingles, underlayment, flashing and other materials. This tear-off stage is usually the loudest part of the project, with steady hammering and debris movement throughout the day.
Once the old roof is removed, the crew can inspect the decking, which is the wood surface supporting the roofing system. Rotted or weakened sections must be replaced before installation continues. Because this damage may not be visible beforehand, decking repairs are a common reason projects take longer than expected.
Day two typically focuses on installing underlayment, moisture barriers and the selected roofing material according to manufacturer specifications. Crews also complete flashing around chimneys, vents and valleys, along with ridge caps and ventilation components. Correct nailing, flashing and ventilation are critical to the roof’s long-term performance.
Some projects continue into a third day for sealing, flashing adjustments, ventilation checks and final inspection. Cleanup should include removing debris and using magnetic tools to collect stray nails around driveways, walkways and landscaping.
During the final walkthrough, homeowners can review the roof, ask about warranties and maintenance, inspect the property for damage and confirm that the work area is clean.
