Nikki, a homeowner in Los Angeles, California had this to ask about the possibility of adding copper roof strips:
Is my 18-year-old asphalt roof a good candidate for copper roof strips? If so, can I get estimates from roofers in my area?
Roofing expert Marty Stout from Go Roof Tune Up had this to say in response:
Your roof could be a candidate for a copper strip. The age of the shingle is not the primary point of consideration. What is the condition of the roof. Have tree branches rubbed on it? Does it have equipment on it? Etc.? You can have a qualified contractor, one that is listed on RoofersCoffeeShop, look at it and provide you a report.
I would suggest before you install the copper strips looking into the claims made related to copper extending the life of the shingles. Someone should be able to demonstrate why or how copper extends the life of shingles. As a side note, Asphalt is not the primary ingredient in what we call asphalt shingles.
