Learn how the soffit and fascia protect your attic, support your gutters and prevent moisture damage.

Soffit and fascia are not terms that most homeowners know, but they play an essential role in protecting the home. The soffit is located beneath the roof’s overhang. Its primary job is to help ventilate the attic, allowing airflow that can reduce trapped moisture and lower the risk of mold, ice dams and warping. As for fascia, it runs along the roof edge and provides support for the gutter system. It also covers exposed rafters, helping protect the home from water infiltration.

These products are usually made from a few different materials:

  • Vinyl is a common choice because it is affordable, low maintenance and resistant to rot.
  • Aluminum is durable, lightweight and resistant to the elements.
  • Wood offers a traditional or rustic appearance but requires regular painting or staining.
  • Composite materials can provide the look of wood with less upkeep.

It is important to note that for all these materials, proper care and maintenance is required to get the best performance from soffit and fascia boards. If homeowners neglect their home’s soffit/fascia, they can expect a variety of issues, including sagging gutters, rotting structures, insulation damage and heating/cooling inefficiencies.

How do you properly care for soffit and fascia? The experts at Lakefront Roofing and Construction emphasize the importance of routine inspection. By having a professional come out to inspect for cracks, holes, discoloration, mold growth, sagging gutters, peeling paint, rotting wood and other signs of damage allows you to address the problems early and prevent more expensive repairs later.
