Stonewater Roofing gives supplies to first-year kindergarten teacher and cancer survivor as part of Clear the List contest designed to support community teachers.

It is no secret that teachers consistently struggle to get all of the materials they need for their classrooms. With prices continuing to rise, getting all the school supplies a classroom needs isn’t getting any easier, especially for those in their first year of teaching like Michelle Hill in Longview, Texas.

Michelle felt the calling to teach kindergarten after a successful battle with colorectal cancer. “God just started showing me that this is where I’m supposed to be, and this was the home for me,” Michelle told KETK. During her treatments she began volunteering and substituting at Pine Tree Primary, it was there that she befriended her daughter’s teacher Jackye Mosley. “She was taking care of Aniston,” says Michelle. “She would come in all teary eyed to school.”

Last November, when Michelle had completed her treatments and was given the all clear from her doctors, she began teaching. That is when Jackye nominated Michelle for Stonewater Roofing’s Clear the List Contest.

The contest provides school supplies for teachers, with the organization paying for everything on a teacher’s Amazon wish list.

“Her story is worth telling,” says Jackye. When Michelle was surprised earlier this month with all the supplies she could dream for to teach her first year, Jackye told her, “‘Your story won, and you have a beautiful story.’ Of course she was so shocked, and I was too."

Surrounded by family and friends, Michelle went through each of her boxes filled with notebooks, pencils and craft materials. “To see her face when she turned around, and your list is cleared was truly heartwarming,” said Jacob Law, co-owner of Stonewater Roofing . This is Stonewater Roofing’s 4th year hosting the Clear the List contest, and just this year they gave away more than 450 items to 12 educators for the school year.

Now, with all of these school supplies, Michelle is set up to successfully teach to her fullest ability. Michelle feels blessed that there are support systems for her community like Stonewater Roofing who are helping teachers.

“I believe in our district and I believe in what we do here on a daily basis and want to be a part of that,” Michelle tells CBS19. “It’s an honor for my story to be told and to be recognized so that others can know that you can go through hard things and come out, and there’s something else that you can give. You can still be giving to the community and those around you."
