CS, a homeowner in Pennsylvania, wanted to know the difference between GAF's Timberline HDZ and Ultra HDZ architectural shingle to help make their decision for their new roof, so they turned to the experts and asked:
Not sure if this is the right group to ask this question. If not, I apologize. We need some unbiased opinions. We have gotten two roofing estimates. One person uses a GAF 50 year shingle (that’s what he says anyway, but I can’t find any info on it online) and the other person uses a GAF Timberline HDZ or, for $700 more, Ultra HDZ. We can’t seem to find any info on the GAF shingle with a 50 year warranty. We are not picky about color and don’t need a specific design. We just want to get a really good, long lasting shingle. Any opinions on these shingles mentioned? Difference between Timberline HDZ and Ultra HDZ architectural shingle. Will one last longer? We want long life, not the prettiest shingle.
Roofing expert Henry Staggs had this to say in response:
