A couple completed their dream home build on their dream island with help from Quarrix.

For Mike and Susan, Kauai is a place of great significance. On their honeymoon 30 years ago, they instantly fell in love with the beauty of the island. Kauai was, without question, the destination for their future. They promised each other that later in life they would build their ideal home on the peaceful Hawaii land. After years of planning and preparation, their dream became a reality in 2016.

Their plan to open a Bed & Breakfast on the island would help support their retirement and the building of their dream home. They set out to build not just one house, but several little homes or island villas that would be rentable properties to vacationers on the island. Their picturesque location is the perfect spot for their home and endeavor, it was the local surroundings that impacted the tile profile and color Susan ultimately selected for their new home's roof.

The couple worked with local draftsman, Donivan Konno, to incorporate their ideas into the design of the homes. They wanted to have an Asian flair to the home and thought the roof would be the best way to add the Asian touches they wanted. The Verdigris color was selected because Susan thought the green tile color would be a beautiful backdrop against the mountains and view. She was right! The Quarrix tile roof made the home fit right into the island style of Kauai. Susan says that she is very pleased with her decision to choose composite tile.

Being her dream home and business, she did a lot of research in comparing clay tiles, ceramic tiles, concrete tiles and composite tiles to one another to understand their pros and cons. In the end, she decided the durability of composite tile over the other roofing choices was the best decision for her home. She said the biggest surprise to her was how much the roofers that installed her tile loved the product. Since this was the first time the roofing installers had used Quarrix composite tile, they told her how much they liked it because it was very lightweight, and they could walk on the roof and not worry about breaking a tile. Having never thought about it from the installer’s perspective, she was delighted to hear the positive feedback.

Susan put a lot of heart and energy into building her dream home. Her goal was to offer up a place where guests would feel refreshed and renewed while on holiday in Kauai. I think she far exceeded her goal.
