Experienced roofer Jeff McRay answers homeowners' top questions about roofing.

Are you going in circles trying to get answers for a new roofing project? Then stop. Our “Contractor Insights” features give you some fast insights from leaders in our roofing industry. With 15 years of service to the Oklahoma City marketplace, McRay Roofing & Exteriors LLC has seen it all. We’ve asked company President Jeff McRay to share with you exactly what you’ll need to know when tackling your upcoming roofing project.

Q: What are the top three things homeowners should ask a roofer about when looking for a replacement roof?

A: Make certain you check on the roofer’s insurance and worker’s comp first. After that, get referrals from their past clients and then call them. You’ll also want to get pictures of past projects to actually see the workmanship of what the roofer’s team has done previously.

Q: Why should homeowners seriously consider composite roofing when looking for a roof?

A: Composite roofing is basically a one and done type of roof. It’s the most impact-resistant material on the market today. In most locations, a homeowner should receive a discount off their insurance premiums yearly with composite roofing, which is a bonus. Plus, there’s a good possibility of never having to replace a composite roof again!

Q: What are your best homeowner survival tips for getting through a roofing installation?

A:

  1. Show patience. This is a big project. We try to make it as easy on the homeowner as possible, but some roofing projects can take two to three weeks, so you’ll need to be patient with the noise, people and activity going on.
  2. Second, park your car away from the house. You’ll want it to be easily accessible and in a location where it can’t get damaged.
  3. And third, if it’s at all possible, take a vacation during the roof installation so you don’t have to deal with the disruption in your lifestyle.

Q: If there’s storm damage involved to a roof, what tips do you have for a homeowner working with an insurance adjuster?

A:

  • Tip #1 is to make sure to access all the damage to your property and not just your roof. It’s possible your gutters, windows, siding and/or deck were also damaged.
  • Tip #2 is to take pictures immediately of all the damage to give to the adjuster.
  • Tip #3 is to know the actual age of your roof. There are more Actual Cash Value (ACV) policies being written, so it’s important to share this information with your adjuster.

Q: Why has your company chosen to recommend DaVinci composite roofing to your customers?

A: I’ve done some really special projects with DaVinci. The beauty of the composite tiles is unmatched, which enhances the beauty of the overall project. All of my clients have been in love with their new DaVinci roofs.
