Start by verifying licenses and insurance. Make sure the contractor actually does the kind of work you need, and take a look at how they treat people online. Professionalism leaves clues.

Meet them face-to-face. The right contractor will explain things clearly, answer questions honestly and never rush you into a decision. Before you hire, check their record with the local court. A long history of disputes is something every homeowner should pause and think about.

Once you’ve found the right fit — then discuss price. Negotiation works best when trust is already in place."
