Why roof ventilation matters

Balanced attic airflow can help protect shingles, control moisture and reduce temperature extremes throughout the year. 

Homeowners can face a variety of harsh weather patterns, from humid summers, icy winters, strong winds and dramatic temperature swings. While shingles and flashing often receive the most attention, Henderson Roofing & Construction explains that roof ventilation plays an equally important role in protecting the home throughout changing conditions. 

A properly ventilated attic continuously exchanges warm indoor air for cooler outdoor air. This airflow helps regulate attic temperatures, remove moisture and protect roofing materials from premature deterioration. Henderson Roofing identifies ventilation problems as a common factor behind early shingle failure, mold growth, higher energy bills and ice dams. 

An effective ventilation system typically combines intake and exhaust vents. Soffit vents beneath the roof’s eaves draw cooler air into the attic, while ridge vents release warm, humid air near the roof’s peak. Other options include box vents, turbine vents and powered attic fans. Powered systems can be useful in certain situations, but careful installation is necessary to prevent them from pulling conditioned air from the living space. 

Ventilation is especially important during winter. Warm attic air can melt snow on the roof, allowing water to refreeze along the edges and form ice dams. During summer, trapped attic heat can force an air-conditioning system to work harder and expose shingles to excessive heat from below. Warning signs of inadequate ventilation may include musty odors, unusually high attic temperatures, rusted metal components, attic moisture or frost, uneven indoor temperatures, curling shingles and recurring ice dams. 

As a simplified guideline, a roof may require one square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic floor space, divided between intake and exhaust. However, roof pitch, insulation, attic size and structural design can affect the appropriate balance.
