Understanding the major stages of a roof replacement can help homeowners prepare for the work, noise and potential schedule changes.

Replacing a roof is a major home improvement project, but knowing what happens during the process can make the experience easier to manage. According to IKO, several factors can influence how long a roof replacement takes, including the size and shape of the roof, the roofing crew, the materials being installed and weather conditions. Larger roofs generally require more time, while steep slopes, chimneys, skylights and multiple roofing layers can add complexity.

Material choice can also affect the schedule. Slate and tile shingles may take longer to remove and install because of their weight, while asphalt shingles are lighter and can allow for faster tear-offs and installations. Weather can create additional delays because roofers should not work on roofs during rainy or snowy conditions.

The first major stage is tearing off the existing roof. This process removes shingles, underlayment and flashing to expose the roof deck. Contractors can then inspect the deck and replace damaged or rotted sections as needed.

IKO notes that an average-sized roof tear-off may be completed in one day, though larger or more complicated roofs may take longer. Because falling debris can leave nails and other sharp objects around the property, homeowners should move vehicles out of the driveway and keep children and pets away from the work zone.

After the roof deck has been inspected and repaired, installation begins. Roofing crews may replace flashing around chimneys, vents and valleys before installing underlayment, starter shingles, the selected roofing material, ridge vents and ridge caps.

Installation may take one or two days depending on the roof’s size and complexity. Homeowners who remain at home should also expect ongoing noise and activity while crews work overhead.
