Metal roofing provides so much more than modern aesthetics; the experts break down the durability and economic benefits of installing metal roofing.

In a recent episode of the AskARoofer™ podcast, Lauren White sat down with Renee Ramey, executive director of Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA), to discuss the benefits of using metal roofing in residential projects. Choosing a metal roof is one of the best decisions a homeowner can make for their home. Metal roofing materials can provide long-lasting durability, optimal energy efficiency and modern aesthetics to any project – benefits that Renee and the MRA team hope to communicate with homeowners.

“I’ve been in the industry for nearly 28 years now, and I’m very passionate about metal roofing. MRA exists to educate and promote metal roofing to homeowners,” Renee shared. She explained the basics, noting, “Inherently, metal will perform better than traditional roofing materials. It’s durable, highly recyclable and can last practically forever. A lot of structures made from [steel] will be around far longer than those made from other materials. So, there’s decades of proof to show that metal roofing is for the long term.”

For those who live in regions with extreme weather concerns, metal roofing provides a sense of security against conditions like severe winds, hurricanes, hail and even wildfire risks. The durability is unmatched; not only do metal panels outlast in harsh climates, but they can be expected to offer lifespans upwards of fifty years!

Renee emphasized the stark difference in the durability of metal compared to traditional materials against the elements, sharing, “Regardless of what quality of asphalt roof, if, say, the hail's big enough and comes down hard enough, it's going to cause fractures or breaks. But metal typically doesn't fracture. It might dent potentially, but you're not going to see any kind of a fracture or crack. That's huge.”

At the end of the day, there’s a certain level of security with metal roofing. Homeowners can rest easy knowing that their investment was worth every penny. Metal panels outlast traditional shingles in nearly every aspect, and they’re not just beneficial for the sake of their durability and long lifespan. Modern metal roofs can not only bring sleek aesthetics to a project, but for those wanting a traditional look, metal can mimic the look of shingles. The possibilities are endless!
