Here at AskARoofer, we like to highlight the incredible people that make up our industry and community. One of the ways we do this is through our Contractor Spotlights, where members of the industry can nominate others to be featured. This nomination was sent in by Claudia Ubl, who wanted to put the spotlight on James Ubl, the founder and owner of UBL Roofing.
What inspired you to nominate this person?
James embodies what it means to be a true owner-operator. As the founder of UBL Roofing, he doesn’t just lead from behind a desk — he’s out in the field inspecting, estimating and even installing alongside his crew. In an industry where ownership often steps away from the day-to-day, James proves that wearing multiple hats isn’t a weakness but a strength. His ability to balance leadership, craftsmanship and client relationships is what makes him stand out and inspires both his team and customers.
How does this person go above and beyond for their customers and/or their community?
James has built UBL Roofing on the belief that roofing is not just about the roof, but about people. He takes extra time during inspections to educate homeowners, helping them understand the condition of their roof and guiding them toward the right decisions for their home and budget. His approach empowers customers with knowledge instead of pressure, which has earned him lasting trust in the community.
Beyond his customer relationships, James is passionate about inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in the trades. He participated in the Irwin Trade Strong Campaign, where he shared how roofing can provide second chances and new opportunities for individuals overcoming past challenges, including addiction. His story and leadership continue to show others that the trades can be both life-changing and community-building.
What else would you like to share about the person you're nominating?
James’ story is proof that success in roofing doesn’t always follow the “big company” model. While many believe owners have to step back from the tools to grow, James shows the opposite — that an owner who stays connected to the craft can lead by example, earn the respect of his crew and build stronger trust with clients. His perspective is shaped not just by business ownership, but by lived experience in the field, which makes his voice especially valuable in conversations about the future of the trades. By sharing openly through initiatives like the Irwin Trade Strong Campaign, James is helping redefine what it means to be a contractor today: a teacher, a mentor and a leader who proves that roofing can provide both opportunity and redemption.
