How the sunny season wears on your roof

As the summer ends in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s important to be aware of what the warmer temperatures and longer days might have done to your roof.
Have you noticed rising cooling costs, uneven indoor temperatures, musty odors, damp insulation or visible shingle wear as summer comes to a close? These can all be a result of your roof spending a long summer in the sun and heat. In the summer, heat tends to gather in the attic or crawlspaces of homes buildings. That built-up heat can cause a variety of issues. For one, trapped heat can radiate into living areas, place additional strain on air conditioning systems and raise your bills.
It can also damage your roofing materials. For example, excessive attic heat may bake asphalt shingles from below, contributing to curling, cracking and granule loss. Poor airflow combined with temperature swings can place additional stress on roof decking and other components.
With these issues in mind, it’s a good idea to give your roof a bit of a pick-me-up at the end of the summer! Bringing in a professional to inspect your roof is the first step, as they can help you identify what the root issue is.
The team at J&K Roofing performs these types of inspections frequently and recently shared some insights into what they often find:
Homeowners often focus on shingles or insulation, but roof ventilation can also impact how comfortable and efficient a home feels when temperatures climb. Without a well-designed system, heat builds rapidly in the attic and begins to affect everything below it.
Alternatively, a well-designed system keeps a building’s occupants comfortable while also preserving a roof’s structural integrity.
