Assessing damage after a storm can be overwhelming and stressful, but this guide breaks it down into simple steps.

In areas prone to aggressive storms, it's wise to keep a close eye on weather forecasts to make sure you can secure your home prior to the event. In a similar vein, it is good to keep an emergency kit with essentials, such as flashlights, batteries, water and a first aid kit. But once you’ve outlasted the storm, it can be stressful to figure out the next steps. That’s where this guide, put together by the experts here at Coastal Roofing Solutions, comes in! It is designed to help homeowners who experience storm damage get the help and repairs you need safely and without compounding damage to your home.

Step 1: Assess the damage safely

Safety first: Avoid climbing onto the roof immediately after a storm. Instead, use binoculars or a camera zoom to inspect from the ground.

Document everything: Take photos and notes of any visible damage. This can include missing shingles, damaged gutters or debris.

Step 2: Protect your home

Cover damages: Use tarps to cover any exposed areas to prevent water from entering the home. Secure the tarps properly to withstand winds.

Clear debris: Safely remove any branches or debris from the roof and gutters to prevent additional damage.

Step 3: Contact professionals

Immediate assistance: Contact a licensed roofing contractor for a thorough inspection. Many companies offer emergency inspections and can help assess the full extent of the damage.

Insurance: Contact your insurance company to report the damage. Provide them with the documentation you've collected.

Step 4: Plan for repairs

Repair versus replacement: Based on the professional assessment, decide whether to repair or replace the roof. A contractor can provide you with options and estimates for both.

Schedule repairs: Schedule the repairs as soon as possible, especially if the damage is extensive, to avoid further issues.

Step 5: Prevent future damage

Regular maintenance: Schedule regular roof inspections and maintenance with a licensed contractor to identify and fix vulnerabilities before they lead to major problems.

Enhance roof durability: Consider upgrading to more durable roofing materials that can better withstand future storms.
