Tip of the month, have your chimney maintenanced.

I know it is early summer but did you know now is a great time to have your chimney cleaned and inspected. A chimney is a part of your roof and needs attention. Think about it, the chimney sweeps are slow right now and the rates should be less than in the fall and winter months.

If your fireplace is well used in the winter then it is a good idea to have it checked every year. Keep your family safe and have a certified chimney sweep do the inspection and cleaning. Besides the cleaning, your chimney sweep should check a couple of things also.

  • He should look at the damper to make it is in good order.
  • He should check the bricks and repair any needing attention including the motor cap. This is the blame for a lot of roof leak calls.
  • He should give a general look at the roof flashing and counter flashings. He should clean any debris around the base on the chimney and advise you of any repairs needed.
  • At the same time, it is a good idea for you to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.
  • May I suggest installing a detector in every bedroom and one in the garage.

To find a certified chimney sweep in your area go to Chimney Safety Institute of America at www.csia.org Get ahead of the winter rush and get your chimney cleaned this summer.
