Experienced roofer Merv Beiler answers homeowners' top questions about roofing.

Each month our “Contractor Insights” asks the same five questions of roofers across the country. We purposefully want you to be able to compare the answers of trusted sources to gain expert insights when tackling your roofing project.

This month we’re traveling to Gap, Pennsylvania to gain responses from Merv Beiler, owner of M. Jay Builders, Inc. where Merv and his team provide homeowners with outstanding roofing services. From Lancaster and Chester Counties to the Philadelphia Main Line, the M. Jay Builders crew are known for their dedication to excellence.

Q:  What are the top three things homeowners should ask a roofer about when looking for a replacement roof?

A: Start by asking who will be in charge of the project. Then ask how much experience the crew has at installing the specific roof you are interested in. Anyone can install shingles. The prep and flashing is important, so you want to know about the crew’s experience with those aspects. The details are everything! Finally, make sure they have proper insurance for working on your home.

Q: Why should homeowners seriously consider composite roofing when looking for a roof?

A:  There are a few reasons why DaVinci composite roofings saves the day. First, with the way cedar shakes are now harvested immaturely, the lifetime of cedar shingles is pretty bad. Second, if you’re considering a slate roof, DaVinci is more cost effective, and a lot less weight on your house’s structure. This is a big deal. And, DaVinci slate roofing would fool most people looking at the roof. It’s a great product and aesthetically pleasing!

Q: What are your best “homeowner survival tips” for getting through a roofing installation?

A:

  1. Be prepared for disruptions and allow the team the space they need to get the job done well.
  2. Remove valuables from the ceilings or walls close to the working areas.
  3. Move patio furniture to a safe place.
  4. Keep children and pets inside.
  5. Park cars on the street during the project.

Q: If there’s storm damage involved to a roof, what tips do you have for a homeowner working with an insurance adjuster?

A:  Get a professional to give you an assessment before meeting with your adjuster. Then hear them out and make sure they understand the details and scope of the work.

Q: Why has your company chosen to recommend DaVinci composite roofing to your customers?

A: We enjoy rustic/ historic projects, and DaVinci fits the bill! The synthetic shingles look authentic and are sometimes more cost effective, and especially with slate, you don’t need to worry about the weight. We get satisfaction from installing DaVinci, it’s installation friendly. Standing back and looking at the finished product is always amazing!  I installed DaVinci on my own house, and really like it!
