How roof inspections uncover hidden moisture damage, dry rot and failing components before costly repairs.

Many homeowners judge the health of a roof by what they can see from the ground; missing shingles, moss growth or a water stain appearing on the ceiling. Yet roofing professionals, including the team at HER Roofing, say the most significant problems often begin long before those visible warnings appear. Structural damage can develop quietly beneath the surface, which is why thorough roof inspections play such an important role in protecting a home.

Roofing contractors note that modern roofing systems function as layered assemblies where damage frequently starts out of sight. Moisture infiltration, weakened decking and deteriorating structural components can progress gradually, sometimes for months or even years, before homeowners realize something is wrong. By the time visible symptoms appear, the underlying issue may already be well advanced.

Structural roofing problems typically involve conditions that compromise the stability or long-term performance of the roof. These issues may include dry rot forming in decking or rafters, hidden water damage beneath shingles, deteriorated underlayment or roof lines that begin to sag after prolonged moisture exposure. Because these problems originate below the roof’s surface, they rarely become apparent during a quick visual check from the yard.

As a result, roofing professionals approach inspections as a systematic evaluation of the entire roofing system rather than a simple surface review. The process often begins in the attic, where early signs of trouble are frequently visible. Inspectors examine rafters, sheathing and insulation for water staining, sagging materials or other indicators that structural stress may be developing.

From there, contractors may use specialized diagnostic tools to locate hidden moisture that would otherwise go undetected. Moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras and infrared scanning can reveal subtle temperature variations that signal trapped water within roofing materials. Inspectors also evaluate flashing around chimneys, skylights and roof penetrations, areas where leaks commonly originate, while checking decking and underlayment for soft spots, mold or early-stage wood decay.

Environmental conditions can accelerate these risks. In regions with frequent rainfall and persistent humidity, prolonged moisture exposure increases the likelihood of mold growth, wood rot and structural deterioration. These conditions make routine inspections even more important.

By identifying early warning signs before damage spreads, roofing professionals can often prevent more severe structural failures. Detecting moisture intrusion or weakening components early helps reduce repair costs, extend the life of roofing materials and preserve the long-term value of the home.

This award-winning historic restoration showcases craftsmanship, leadership and the power of asphalt roofing.

HER Roofing Co. Inc. has earned the Gold Award in the 2026 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards presented by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), standing out among the top asphalt roofing projects across North America. The award recognizes HER Roofing’s exceptional work on the historic Settlemier House, an iconic 1892 home in Oregon that required a careful balance of craftsmanship, performance and respect for architectural heritage.

The award-winning project included a full tear-off of the original wood shake roof and installation of a new steep-slope asphalt roofing system. One of the most complex elements was the home’s distinctive cone roof, which demanded detailed planning and precise execution. To meet both performance and aesthetic requirements, the HER Roofing team selected Malarkey Legacy® shingles with Scotchgard™ in Black Oak, chosen for their Class A fire resistance and ability to complement the historic character of the structure.

The challenges went far beyond materials alone. The cone roof’s original spaced sheathing required the crew to vertically score and install plywood more than 50 feet above ground to create a stable deck. An 80-foot lift was used to safely complete the work. The team also addressed rotted curved wood gutters wrapping the cone and coordinated custom fabrication to maintain the building’s original look. Once the roofing was complete, the home’s original copper spire was carefully reinstalled, preserving one of its most recognizable architectural features.

The project was completed in just two weeks by a seven-person crew and serves as a powerful example of how asphalt roofing can deliver durability, safety and beauty, even on highly detailed historic structures.

Behind the Gold Award is a company known for both technical expertise and strong values. Based in Portland, Oregon, HER Roofing Co. Inc. is a 100 percent woman-owned roofing and gutter contractor led by founder Jana Zavala. The company’s name reflects its core principles of Honesty, Equality and Respect, values that are evident in every project they take on.

Jana brings decades of roofing experience to HER Roofing, including leadership roles with major manufacturers and years spent training contractors across the country. She is also a founding member of National Women in Roofing and a well-respected voice in the industry.

HER Roofing is also a proud member of the R-Club, RoofersCoffeeShop’s exclusive contractor community that supports visibility, education, networking and digital growth for roofing professionals. R-Club contractors are committed to professionalism and ongoing improvement, qualities clearly reflected in this Gold Award-winning project.

This national recognition reinforces what many in the industry already know: HER Roofing delivers outstanding craftsmanship, thoughtful leadership and roofs built to last.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By HER Roofing.

Asking the right questions helps homeowners protect their investment and ensures a smooth, high-quality result.

Hiring a roofing contractor is a major decision that impacts the safety, value and longevity of a home. Homeowners want more than competitive pricing; they want proven expertise, clear communication and confidence that the job will be done right the first time. HER Roofing provides a full range of services, including roof repair, roof replacement and flat roofing solutions while helping homeowners navigate the process with transparency and professional guidance. Knowing what questions to ask before signing a contract can make the difference between a short-term fix and a roof built to last.

Why do the right questions matter when hiring a roofer?

When choosing roofing contractors, you’re not just paying for roof work — you’re paying for someone to protect your home from rain, wind and cold. Homeowners want clarity around pricing, roofing systems, warranties and roof maintenance. Asking thoughtful questions builds peace of mind and helps avoid issues such as hidden fees, inadequate roof repairs, safety shortcuts or poor customer service.

People also ask: Do all roofing companies offer warranties? Not always. This is why homeowners should ask about labor warranties, manufacturer coverage and eligibility requirements.

Local terrain and seasonal rainfall patterns affect everything from asphalt shingle performance to long-term flat roofing reliability. That’s why these conversations matter: your roof should be installed for your home’s climate, not just for quick installation.

6 mistakes homeowners make when interviewing roofing companies

Many homeowners start speaking with roofers before knowing what questions will save them time and money. These are the most frequent missteps:

Mistake #1 – Not confirming license and insurance

Reputable roofing specialists hold state licenses and liability insurance. Without it, homeowners risk expensive damage claims.

Mistake #2 – Accepting vague quotes

A proper estimate should outline material, labor, debris disposal and repair costs. HER Roofing clearly itemizes all service elements to help avoid surprise billing.

Mistake #3 – Assuming all roofing types perform equally

From asphalt shingles to metal roofing to concrete and clay tile, roofing materials vary widely in longevity and cost. According to trusted industry guidance from the National Roofing Contractors Association, different materials require different installation standards and maintenance.

Mistake #4 – Not asking about project timeline

Delays are common when no schedule is discussed upfront. Always ask who will be on-site and how long installation and cleanup will take.

Mistake #5 – Ignoring cleanup and disposal

Homeowners sometimes overlook how roofing debris — old shingles, fasteners and membranes — will be removed. HER Roofing includes cleanup planning to protect driveways, lawns and gutters.

Mistake #6 – Overlooking warranty terms

Warranties vary widely. Ask how long the manufacturer’s coverage lasts and whether workmanship warranties are included. Some roofing services offer coverage only if specific maintenance is performed.

HER Roofing helps homeowners avoid these issues by offering complete repair services, clear timelines, cleanup protocols and warranty guidance.

Why these questions matter: Benefits of clarity and preparation

Asking thoughtful questions builds trust and protects your investment. Here’s how:

1 - Quality control — Understanding materials such as asphalt shingles, tile roofing or metal roofing ensures a proper fit.

2 - Better budgeting — Clear communication helps prevent hidden repair costs or roofing system failures.

3 - Improved durability — Asking about installation techniques increases long-term performance.

4 - Higher customer satisfaction — Clients feel confident in their contractor’s skills, safety protocols and cleanup procedures.

Imagine a homeowner unsure about whether to replace aging shingles on a commercial roof. After consulting HER Roofing, they discovered moisture damage requiring insulation upgrades and preventive gutter cleaning. Because they asked the right questions, they avoided mold exposure and escalating expenses.

9 smart questions to ask before you sign

These questions help homeowners confidently compare roofing solutions:

1 - Are you licensed and insured to do roofing in my area? Insurance protects homeowners from liability in the event of an accident.

2 - What roofing systems do you install? Experienced contractors should be comfortable with asphalt shingles, tile roofing, commercial roofs and flat roofing.

3 - Do you offer free estimates? Reputable professionals provide honest, upfront estimates.

4 - What warranties do you provide? Ask how long the manufacturer’s and workmanship coverage lasts.

5 - Which materials do you recommend for my climate and why? Moist, cold weather demands strong waterproofing layers.

6 - Who performs the roof installation? Are subcontractors involved? Consistency improves roof quality.

7 - How long will my commercial roof replacement or roof repair take? Demand timeline transparency.

8 - Do I need additional services, such as gutter installation or moss treatment? In damp regions, scheduled maintenance protects structural integrity.

9 - What safety protocols are in place for the job? Roofing involves electrical work, ladders and heavy materials; safety upgrades matter.

These questions often lead to longer-lasting installations and better repair outcomes.

Expert insights

HER Roofing’s experts bring clarity to the process. They often advise homeowners to:

1 - Ask whether their roof requires architectural sheet metal coping for water protection.

2 - Schedule preventative roof inspections each year

3 - Perform moss treatment early to avoid membrane deterioration

4 - Identify whether insulation contractors should be consulted

5 - Confirm whether any historical restoration processes are involved

One client thought they only needed simple roof repair after spotting stains. After a roof inspection, HER Roofing discovered pervasive rot beneath the tile roof specialists’ previous work. Because they asked questions about complete repair services — not just patchwork — they avoided returning damage and secured comprehensive maintenance instead.

Key takeaway: Homeowners who ask more questions get longer-lasting roofs.

Conclusion

When interviewing a roofing company, detailed questions about warranties, cleanup, scheduling, labor and roofing types help clarify the scope of work. Understanding whether contractors specialize in metal roofing, commercial roof replacement, gutter installation or historical restoration ensures a realistic plan.

Always ask about scheduled maintenance, moss treatment and safety upgrades for long-term results. Choosing a qualified local partner ensures durable roofing solutions tailored to your area’s climate — especially when rain, wind and moisture constantly stress residential and commercial roofs.

The best roofing results come from customized recommendations tailored to location, structure and construction needs.

Homeowners deserve confident decision-making with straightforward guidance from a trusted roofing company.

HER Roofing blended modern materials with historic sensitivity on a demanding cone roof project.

It was early November 2024 when HER Roofing signed the contract to roof the Settlemier House, in Woodburn, Oregon. Built in 1892, the historic house had wood shakes and needed to be converted to composition shingles. The installation had to wait until spring 2025 because a large shake tear-off on a historic home in the Pacific Northwest had weather challenges.

Roofing the Settlemier house was not an easy task. The most noticeable feature of the house was the 50-foot-tall cone roof that needed plywood, and inside the cone roof lived a fairly large family of bats. The roof removal and sheathing took two days. Once the roof was removed, a section of wooden gutter below the cone was exposed and found to be damaged by rot. HER Roofing immediately looked for a source to furnish a new section of curved wooden gutter. In the meantime, plywood had to be scored to curve around the cone roof. Once the roof had plywood, HER Roofing installed Malarkey Arctic Seal down valleys and penetrations. Then, APOC Weather-Armor underlayment on the rest of the roof.

The new section of curved gutter had to be templated twice by the manufacturer, and it took six weeks to make. But the new gutter was beautiful in raw form, and the installation appeared to have no seams. The property owner chose Malarkey Legacy in Black Oak for the roof. An 80-foot lift was rented to safely roof around the cone. Once the roof was installed, HER Roofing began restoration of the old wooden gutters; the gutters were stripped and patched before a new copper metal lining was installed. Once the lining was in place, Gaco S4200 Silicone was used to coat the inside of the gutter. Next, new metal downspouts were installed.

The final touch was the restored copper spire that sat atop the cone. The new roof took about one and a half weeks, and the new gutter took about two months (including manufacturing the new curved section). Overall, HER Roofing has a roof to be proud of with a happy customer.

“HER Roofing did a fantastic job on what was a challenging roof. Their professionalism and attention to detail were appreciated. Jana and her crew are top-notch notch" says Daniel Dinges, Settlemier property owner.

Explore the advantages of partnering with a trusted, experienced roofer.

Your roof plays a crucial role in protecting your property from harsh weather, moisture and everyday wear. For homeowners and property managers throughout the United States, working with a reputable contractor like HER Roofing ensures that roofing repairs, replacements and flat roof installations are handled with precision and long-term reliability in mind. Professional roofing services help safeguard the structure beneath the roof, reduce the risk of leaks and preserve the longevity of the system.

Hiring a qualified roofing company offers more than convenience. It provides access to trained specialists who understand local codes, use manufacturer-approved materials and follow proven installation procedures. Unlike DIY attempts or unlicensed contractors, an established roofing provider delivers accountability at every step, from inspection to final cleanup, which helps guarantee the durability and performance of the finished roof.

Understanding the role of a professional roofing company

Professional roofing is a complex process that goes beyond laying shingles or membranes. It includes:

Detailed roof inspections to detect early signs of wear or leaks.

Assessing structural integrity and identifying potential weaknesses.

Coordinating with roofing manufacturers to ensure installation aligns with warranty requirements.

HER Roofing combines these practices with high-quality roof replacement and flat roof repair solutions to provide clients with peace of mind and lasting protection.

Common misconceptions about roofing

Many assume that roofing is simple. However, proper roofing involves:

Evaluating the roof’s design, pitch and materials.

Selecting the right system for durability involves options like concrete shingle roofing systems or flat roofing solutions.

Performing preventative maintenance, such as roof cleaning and gutter cleaning services, helps avoid long-term damage.

Benefits of hiring a professional roofing company

Hiring professionals brings multiple advantages:

HER Roofing ensures clients receive all of these services, delivering a complete, worry-free roofing experience.

Maintenance tips every homeowner should know

Even with a professional roofing company, homeowners can take steps to extend roof life:

Schedule annual roof inspections to catch minor issues early.

Keep gutters and downspouts clear of debris to prevent water damage.

Trim overhanging branches to reduce risk from falling limbs.

Avoid walking on the roof when unnecessary; this can damage shingles or membranes.

Invest in roof cleaning and pressure washing services to prevent moss, algae and debris buildup.

These simple measures, combined with professional maintenance, ensure roofs remain durable, weather-resistant and aesthetically appealing.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

A Californian homeowner recently reached out with some question about their 15-year-old roof.

Looking at the roof of their shed, Rod noticed a leak. They asked the AskARoofer experts this:

I have a torch down roof on a low slope shed roof that is about 15 years old. I found some rot in a fascia board, indicating a leak. The leak appears to be on the edge of the roof where it meets the metal drip edge. I would like to know if I can heat the torch down roof material and roll it back about a foot along this edge, replace the fascia board and then re heat the torch down? Would I need an adhesive between the metal and the roofing material? If so, what would work best? Thank you.

We recieved multiple responses from our experts, including this one from Jana Zavala of HER Roofing:

Torch down roofs are done in layers. However, most torch down roofs that I have seen on residential homes are made up with a base sheet and a cap sheet. If your torch down roof is only a base and cap, then you are looking at a roof replacement, not a repair. That is because the life expectancy is about 10 years. The surface will look like it's alligator skin texture - rough and possibly cracking.

I would not recommend heating torch down unless you are a professional roofing contractor that has the insurance, appropriate fire extinguisher and can perform a fire watch. In addition, reheating an old torch down, especially one that has aged out, doesn't work.

Our other response came from roofing expert John Kenney with Cotney Consulting Group:

Rod, I wouldn’t recommend using a torch on an older structure, especially one with a wood deck and fascia board. The fire risk increases significantly due to the dry, aged materials and potential hidden gaps near the edge. Instead of reheating and rolling back the old membrane, which may not re-bond reliably, it’s safer to carefully cut back the material, perform the fascia repair and then patch using a cold-applied modified bitumen system or self-adhering membrane. If you must seal it to metal, use a compatible adhesive or flashing cement rated for metal-to-membrane applications. You’ll preserve roof integrity without putting the structure at risk.

title='8 ways to spot a roof leak early'
            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By HER Roofing.

Protect your home, your wallet and your peace of mind by staying ahead of roof issues before they turn into costly, stressful problems.

A well-maintained roof is your home’s first and best defense against the elements, especially in rain-soaked climates. HER Roofing helps homeowners catch issues like worn shingles or aging flashing early, preventing small problems from turning into major headaches. The good news? Most leaks show signs long before serious damage sets in. Knowing what to look for and working with experienced pros like HER Roofing helps you stay ahead of costly repairs and keep your home safe, dry and worry-free.

8 signs your roof may be leaking

1 – Water spots or stains on your ceiling or walls

One of the most common and obvious indicators of a roof leak is the appearance of water spots on your ceiling or walls. In a rainy climate, these stains often worsen quickly and may spread across drywall if they are ignored. Even a small brown spot can signal that water has already breached your roofing system.

Water stains are usually caused by damaged shingles, deteriorated flashing or other weak points that allow moisture to pass through. The longer the leak continues, the greater the chance of mold growth, wood rot and structural damage. The best step is to schedule a professional inspection as soon as you notice discoloration on your ceilings or walls. A licensed roofing contractor will identify the source of the leak and provide the right solution before the damage spreads.

2 – Missing, cracked or damaged shingles

Shingles are designed to protect your roof from rain, wind and sun. When they go missing or become cracked, the surface beneath them is left exposed. High winds and constant moisture make shingle damage especially common. Over time, moss can even lift shingles and create tiny gaps where water seeps in.

Even if missing shingles do not cause an immediate leak, they significantly increase the risk of one. Any exposed seam or gap allows water to enter and damage your roof decking or attic. A professional roofer can replace damaged shingles before the problem worsens, saving you from more expensive repairs later.

3 – Rusted or damaged flashing

Flashing is the thin metal installed around chimneys, skylights and roof edges to keep water from sneaking into seams. In the Pacific Northwest, flashing is often exposed to steady rainfall, which speeds up rust and deterioration. Once flashing breaks down, water can enter areas of your roof that are difficult to inspect until the damage has already spread.

If you notice rust around your chimney or along roof edges, it is a strong sign that your flashing may no longer be protecting your home. A roofing professional can reseal or replace the flashing to ensure your roof system remains watertight.

4 – Shiners (Exposed or frosted nails)

Shiners are roofing nails that missed the framing member during installation. In cold, wet winters, these nails collect condensation that freezes at night and thaws during the day. The repeated cycle causes moisture buildup in your attic, which can eventually drip down into your living spaces.

Shiners are not always visible from the outside, but they can often be spotted in the attic during colder months. Because this problem can look minor but lead to long-term leaks, it is best addressed by a roofer who can properly secure the nails and prevent moisture damage.

5 – Mold or algae growth along roof edges or walls

Mold and algae are common because of the damp, shaded conditions around many homes. You might see dark streaks, moss patches or green growth along roof edges or exterior walls. While this might seem cosmetic at first, moss and algae hold moisture against roofing materials, which weakens them over time and makes leaks more likely.

Professional roof cleaning is the safest way to deal with this issue. DIY scrubbing or pressure washing can damage shingles and shorten roof life. A licensed roofer can remove growth, treat affected areas and help prevent it from returning.

6 – Stains around bathroom ceiling fans

If you notice brown rings or water marks around your bathroom ceiling fan, it could be a warning sign. Sometimes the issue comes from a leaky roof vent cap, while other times condensation forms because of poor insulation around ducting. In either case, moisture from your bathroom should never reach your ceiling.

A roofing contractor can inspect your vents, check the insulation and correct any roof-related causes. Ignoring this sign risks hidden leaks that spread quickly through ceilings and attic spaces.

7 – Sagging or rusted gutters

Gutters are an important part of your roofing system because they direct water away from your home. Heavy rains and falling debris often cause gutters to sag, clog or rust. When gutters fail, water overflows and seeps into the roofline or foundation.

Sagging or rusted gutters are more than an inconvenience. They are an early signal that water damage could soon impact your roof. Call a professional roofer who can repair or replace gutters before leaks spread into your home.

8 – Clogged soffits and poor ventilation

Soffit vents keep air circulating in your attic, but when they clog with dust, moisture or moss, ventilation stops. Without proper airflow, warm air builds up and condensation forms, creating the perfect conditions for leaks. In the PNW, where humidity is high, clogged soffits are a serious risk.

A roofer can check soffit vents during an inspection and restore ventilation so your roof stays dry and healthy. Addressing this issue early helps prevent rot, mold and leaks.

How climate impacts roof health

Homeowners know that the weather can be unpredictable. From weeks of steady rainfall to sudden windstorms, the local climate puts roofs under constant stress. Moisture creates the perfect environment for moss and algae, which slowly break down shingles and trap water on the surface. Freezing temperatures in winter also expand tiny cracks, allowing leaks to form when the ice thaws.

Because of these conditions, even a small roof issue can turn into a much larger problem in a short period of time. Scheduling seasonal inspections and acting quickly when you notice warning signs is the best way to protect your home. Local roofers understand how climate affects different roofing materials and can recommend solutions designed to last in this environment.

Preventing roof leaks through regular maintenance

While you cannot stop storms or heavy rain, you can take proactive steps to lower the risk of leaks. Clearing debris from your gutters, trimming overhanging branches and scheduling roof cleaning all help extend the life of your roof. Roof cleaning is especially important because moss and algae grow quickly in damp conditions.

The most important part of maintenance, however, is having a professional inspection. A roofing contractor can spot issues like loose flashing, lifted shingles or clogged soffits before they cause damage inside your home. Regular maintenance is not just about avoiding leaks today; it is about preserving the value and safety of your home for years to come.

What happens if you ignore a roof leak

Delaying repairs on a leaking roof often makes the problem much worse. Even a small leak can allow water to spread into your attic insulation, drywall and electrical systems. Over time, the constant exposure to moisture causes mold growth, rotting wood and structural weakness that can threaten the safety of your home.

Where heavy rainfall is common, leaks rarely stay small for long. Water intrusion can quickly compromise your roofing system and lead to expensive interior repairs. By addressing roof leaks right away, you save money in the long run and protect the comfort and security of your household.

Why professional roof inspections matter

Homeowners face unique challenges when it comes to maintaining their roofs. Heavy rainfall, frequent storms and year-round moss growth mean even minor issues can quickly turn into expensive repairs. While spotting the warning signs is important, the only way to be certain your roof is protected is through a professional inspection.

A licensed roofing contractor has the training, tools and experience to identify problems that are not always visible to homeowners. Professional inspections also ensure that any repair work meets safety standards and extends the life of your roof. Choosing expert roof leak repair services over quick fixes protects your investment and keeps your home safe for years to come.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By HER Roofing.

Professional gutter cleaning goes beyond debris removal to preserve your roof and your home.

As we welcome the autumn season, the colorful falling leaves create beautiful landscapes as well as logistical challenges. Leaves land anywhere and everywhere, forming piles in your yard and clogging gutters. While taking a rake to a lawn is simple enough, attempting to clear clogged gutters of leaves and debris is a more involved process than the average homeowner might think. Attempting a DIY gutter cleaning may put you at a higher risk for injury, not to mention an incomplete job.

That’s why HER Roofing, a trusted business in flat roof installation, repairs and maintenance, encourages homeowners to hire professional gutter cleaning services. Trained crews can spot early signs of wear and damage, clear debris more thoroughly and help you avoid expensive future repairs.

Understanding the gutter cleaning debate

Gutters are designed to channel rainwater away from your home’s foundation, walls, and roof. When they’re clogged with leaves, dirt and debris, water overflows and can cause significant structural issues. This is especially problematic in areas with rainy climate, where excessive moisture can accelerate roof deterioration, foundation cracks and siding damage.

Using a leaf blower to clear gutters may remove loose debris, but it often misses compacted dirt, hidden blockages in downspouts, and early signs of damage. On the other hand, professional gutter cleaning involves hands-on removal, thorough flushing and inspection of the entire gutter system to ensure optimal performance.

The benefits of professional gutter cleaning over leaf blowers

1 - Thorough debris removal

Leaf blowers can push some leaves out of gutters, but they tend to leave behind sludge, grit from shingles, and tightly packed blockages. Professionals physically remove all debris, ensuring no partial clogs remain to cause water back-up during heavy rains.

2 - Preventing roof damage

Attempting DIY gutter cleaning without proper tools can damage shingles, gutter brackets, or even the roof edge — especially with flat roofing systems or older installations. A professional roofing company like HER Roofing uses specialized tools and techniques that protect your roof’s integrity.

3 - Safety first

Gutter cleaning requires working at height, often on ladders in slippery or uneven conditions. Professionals are trained in ladder safety, use harnesses when needed and can identify unstable areas that might be dangerous for an untrained person.

4 - Detecting early issues

When HER Roofing’s experts perform gutter cleaning, they also inspect the roof, gutters and downspouts for signs of leaks, loose fasteners and potential roofing system failures. Leaf blowers can’t spot these problems.

Why it matters for homeowners and businesses

In areas with a wet climate, neglecting your gutters can quickly lead to expensive repairs. Standing water from clogged gutters can seep under shingles, saturate insulation and cause interior leaks. Over time, this can require roof repair or even roof replacement — both far more costly than preventative cleaning.

For commercial buildings with flat roofing systems, clogged gutters and drains can lead to ponding water, which strains the roofing membrane and reduces its lifespan. Whether it’s thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), synthetic rubber (EPDM) or built-up roof systems, regular cleaning prevents unnecessary wear and tear.

Best practices for keeping gutters clean and functional

While a leaf blower can be used for quick debris removal between professional visits, it should never replace comprehensive cleaning. HER Roofing recommends:

1 - Schedule professional cleaning twice a year – Once in late fall after leaves drop, and again in early spring to remove winter debris.

2 - Inspect after major storms – Wind and rain can fill gutters with debris overnight.

3 - Combine gutter cleaning with roof inspections – Catch issues early before they require costly repairs.

4 - Consider gutter guards – They can reduce the frequency of cleanings, though they don’t eliminate the need.

By following these steps, homeowners protect their roofing systems, siding and foundation from preventable damage.
