The AskARoofer Minisode series is perfect for home and business owners looking for bite-sized insights into their roof.  

For many home and business owners, their roof is a bit of mystery. We all know that we want one above our head, but the details can be a little murky at times. Solving this and demystifying the roofing process is a huge goal of the AskARoofer team, but we’re well aware not everyone has time for a masterclass in roofs. That’s why we created the AskARoofer (AAR) Minisode series! 

This series is designed to be an accessible way for home and building owners to learn more about their roofs! It brings roofing experts on to share key roof knowledge, like what maintenance can save you from costly repairs and what to do to avoid leaks post-storm. The best part? 1 – Solar system warranties 

In this Minisode, Kyle Nurminen of Total Roofing Systems and Mark Swift of Solar Energy Systems share key information for homeowners about solar systems. As John Chan, owner of The Durable Slate Company explained, “[Slate definitely has unique structural needs] because it’s a very heavy material. Standard slates, which are a quarter to three-eighths inch, are generally 850 pounds per square (a 10’x10’ area). And there are even denser stones that can be up to 950-1,000 pounds per square.”  

3 – Benefits of roof coatings 

Another recent episode featured Sara Jonas, vice president of marketing at ICP Group, in a discussion about the benefits of roof coatings, both on commercial buildings and residential homes. Sara really summed it up best when she said, “When it comes to benefits of coatings, energy efficiency and comfort of an interior space are really the big ones. But there’s also benefits for a roof’s lifespan because of the restoration aspect.”  

4 – Fire prevention and roofing  

And last but not least, we had a Minisode all about how fire-resistant roofing products are key to protecting your home from the risk of fire. The expert featured on it was Robin Anderson from Westlake Royal Roofing Solutions, who shared insight into what fire-resistant roof solutions look like in action, saying, “In a wildfire situation, the embers are a huge concern. You want to prevent even the smallest ember or the heat transfer from getting into a roofing system to catch things on fire. It’s really a matter of thinking about the whole system.”

According to the 2025 Remodeling Impact Report, one of the top three projects REALTORS® across America recommend homeowners do before selling a home is adding a new roof. These same REALTORS report seeing a 43% increase in demand for new roofing during the past two years from homebuyers.

Interestingly, REALTORS have seen home preference options shift since 2020. In just the past two years, they have described an increased demand for kitchen upgrades, new roofing and bathroom renovations.

Protecting your home

How did new roofing “sneak” in as being as important as kitchen and bathroom upgrades?

“Wicked weather and climate change have caused people nationwide to take greater notice of the roofing products that protect their family and cherished possessions,” says Mark Pagel, general manager of DaVinci Roofscapes. “With everything from hail to severe winds to wildfires raging nationwide, homeowners are paying more attention to the roofs they’re ‘inheriting’ when buying a new home. They want a roof that’s aesthetically pleasing, but also one that can withstand whatever Mother Nature brings its way.”

Made of virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers with a highly-specialized fire retardant, DaVinci composite slate and shake roofs are Class A fire and Class 4 impact rated. That’s the top-of-the-line ratings. They can handle severe weather conditions including hail and hurricane strength winds up to 180 mph.

Over time, these composite roofing tiles resist fading, rotting and cracking. Insects also can’t find a home here. Silverfish, termites, carpenter ants and beetles can’t penetrate the DaVinci roofing.

Oh joy!

The National Association of Realtors® (who created the 2025 Remodeling Impact Report along with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry), calculated a Joy Score for each of the projects they evaluated in the report. This is a ranking from 1 to 10 based on the happiness homeowners reported upon completion of a remodeling project.

The typical Joy Score ranking for a finished project is 8.2. There are just three projects that have a perfect Joy Score of 10: adding a primary bedroom suite, a kitchen upgrade and new roofing. Again, roofing makes a surprise appearance in the ratings.

In the case of a roof, the satisfaction a homeowner feels upon the completion of a new roof blends perfectly with another set of numbers from the study: 28% of owners report that the single most important result from remodeling is better functionality and livability; 23% report durability and long-lasting results; and 23% report beauty and aesthetics. All of these are achievable with a new roof.

TCO and ROI

DaVinci® Roofscapes continues record-breaking recycling efforts. 

During the past 13 years, DaVinci® Roofscapes, a division of Westlake Royal Building Products™ USA Inc. has reprocessed more than 12.9 million pounds of polymer scrap materials. In conjunction with the upcoming Earth Day on April 22, the composite slate and shake roofing manufacturer announced that its operations successfully recycled 768,377 pounds of polymer waste in 2024. 

“This is an extraordinary amount of product that we are repalletizing to make starter tiles and selling to outside sources to create other products,” according to Mark Pagel, general manager at DaVinci Roofscapes in Lenexa, Kansas. “For the eighth consecutive year we have contributed to net zero landfill scrap. Our waste is repurposed and reused, making this plant an exceptionally environmentally friendly operation.” 

Zero waste always a top goal 

At DaVinci, every pound of polyethylene scrap generated by the company’s expansive manufacturing operation goes into repurposed product. Green initiatives are always being enhanced to assure scrap from making roofing tiles is recycled. The first priority is to reuse the product at the Lenexa operations. 

“We make our composite roofing and siding tiles with virgin polymers,” says Mark. “Our products are created in dozens of colors and color blends. When we switch from one color to another, there’s a natural transitioning period between the colors during the change. Those transition tiles are ‘off spec’ and cannot be used, so we recycle as much of that material as we can.” 

Mark relates that the transition tiles are carefully pulled off the product line. They’re segregated into specifically colored scrap bins. In the past year, 725,554 pounds of these colored tiles were ground up and repurposed into starter roofing tiles, which are generally unseen on the roof. The reground product was also inserted into the underside cavity on solid accessory roofing parts, with virgin resins used on the top visible portion of the product. 

The remainder of the recycled product was shipped out of the DaVinci facility for use by other companies.. 

Why recycled polymers are valuable

DaVinci slate and shake tiles are made of virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers. A highly-specialized fire retardant is added to the mix, making them fire resistant. DaVinci products are warranted to last decades on homes and commercial projects. However, after their lifespan, they are also 100 percent recyclable. These same features make the recycled polymers advantageous when they are used in recycled products. 

Made for realistic beauty, high performance and low maintenance, DaVinci products resist splitting, cracking, curling and fading. Each polyethylene tile has been crafted to resist high winds, mold, algae, fungus and insects. DaVinci composite products are Class A fire and Class 4 impact rated. They are certified by ASMD 3161 to straight line winds up to 110 mph and hurricane high velocity winds up to 180 mph.  

Manufactured at the DaVinci Roofscapes facility in Kansas, the composite shake siding and roofing tiles are made with color throughout each piece and require no painting. The composite tiles serve as an environmentally-friendly alternative to real wood shakes, natural slate tiles and plastic siding.
