How roofing companies are changing veterans’ lives, one home at a time.

With a constant news cycle, it’s hard to keep up with everything happening in the world. But we are here to share some good stories about good people. For your daily dose of happy news, here are four stories of communities coming together to protect veterans who have spent their lives protecting our country.

1 – A Texas Navy veteran

A roofing company in southeast Texas, SETX Roofing Pros, held a community giveaway, “Operation Overwatch,” at the end of last year. The recipient of the giveaway was Anthony Cordel, a disabled Navy veteran living in Lumberton, Texas. Anthony served aboard the USS San Jacinto from 1996 to 2001. At the end of his career, he was medically discharged after being diagnosed with Becker’s muscular dystrophy.

After returning home, he was faced with new limitations and expenses that made big home repairs, like a roof replacement, out of reach. So, when SETX Roofing Pros selected him for their Operation Overwatch giveaway, they couldn’t believe it. As Anthony told 12News, “I’m at a loss for words. It didn’t seem real until the supplies arrived yesterday.”

For Steve Pike and the team at SETX Roofing Pros, they were just happy to make a difference in their community. He shared, “Roofs aren’t cheap, and we work hard all year long. This may be another day at the office for us, but we’re really trying to make an impact in Southeast Texas.”

2 – A Korean War veteran in Wisconsin

Heading North, we have a story about a veteran in Madison, Wisconsin. Gerald Boehnen served in the Korean War in 1951 and 1952, and his son nominated him for Heins Contracting’s sixth annual Roofing A Vet campaign. When he found out that he was chosen for a new roof free of charge, he was shocked, telling WMTV, “I couldn’t believe it to be truthful because I never won nothing in my life.”

When asked about the campaign and reroofing, Bryan Heins, co-owner of Heins Contracting, simply said it was born of a desire to give back to the men and women who served our country. He shared, “It feels great to give back to people and especially giving back to people like our veterans where I feel like for everything they do for our country that they don’t quite get enough recognition especially the older veterans when they’ve been through so much.”

3 – An Ohio Air Force veteran

Over in Ohio, the Third Estimate runs a program with a similar goal of giving back to veterans called the Third Patriot Project. Through this program, they are able to provide a free roof for one or two veterans each year, veterans like Jared Bzdock.

Jared served in the U.S. Air Force over the course of six years and was deployed on two tours in Iraq. He found out about the program when he met Tara Colopy, the CEO of the Third Estimate, at his local Veterans Association. When Tara heard that he and his wife’s roof, which had been replaced just five years ago, was going soft and losing shingles, she knew that she and her team could help.

Jared almost couldn’t believe it, telling News 5, “Who does that? Who gets a new roof for free? Most people think of a roof like, ‘Oh, it's just a roof.’ But no, it's like somebody handing you $20,000. It's amazing.”

4 – A National Guard veteran from Minnesota

Our final story today comes from Minnesota and centers around Trevor Nelson, a U.S. Army National Guard veteran. Trevor has dedicated his life to serving and giving to others, having joined the guard at 17, back in 2003.

Last fall, the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Program, Purple Heart Homes and Priority Construction came together to give Trevor a thank-you gift for his decades of service – a brand-new roof! The gift was incredible for Trevor and his family, who told ABC 6 News, “I got the call while I was at work, kind of beside myself, I didn’t think I’d get approved... It’s very humbling, it’s surreal that this is getting done and I won’t have to worry about my roof for another 20, 30 years, [it’s incredible].”

When old gutters put your home at risk

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By The Third Estimate.

Investing in an upgraded gutter system can help you avoid expensive repairs and protect your home from serious water damage.

Gutters play a critical role in protecting a home, yet they are often overlooked until damage appears. When debris collects and water cannot drain properly, the results can include roof leaks, rotting fascia and even foundation issues. At The Third Estimate, we want homeowners to understand the damage that can arise from aging gutter systems. Enlisting a professional to install new gutters with gutter guards provides a long-term solution that prevents costly repairs and preserves your home year-round.

Why old gutters struggle in the fall and winter

Most older gutters were never designed to handle the volume of leaves, twigs, and debris that fall from mature trees. When gutters become clogged, water has nowhere to go. Instead of flowing safely through your downspouts, water can overflow onto your roof, damage shingles, rot fascia boards or even seep into your home’s foundation.

Even if you clean your gutters regularly, old gutters can sag, pull away from the roofline or develop leaks over time. Once that happens, your home is vulnerable to every rainstorm. That’s why replacing old gutters is often the safest and most cost-effective solution.

The advantages of new gutters with gutter guards

Installing new gutters is the first step in protecting your home but pairing them with gutter guards takes that protection to the next level. Here’s why this combination works so well:

1 - Prevent water damage – Gutter guards keep leaves and debris out, ensuring water flows freely through your gutters and downspouts. This protects your roof, siding, and foundation from leaks and water damage.

2 - Reduce seasonal maintenance – Climbing ladders to remove leaves multiple times each season is not only time-consuming — it’s dangerous. Gutter guards drastically reduce the need for frequent cleaning, saving you time and worry.

3 - Increase gutter longevity – New gutters are designed to withstand industry-standard wind and snow load ratings, and gutter guards help them stay free of clogs that can cause rust, sagging or separation from the roofline.

4 - Enhance curb appeal – Modern gutters come in a variety of colors and styles that complement your home, instantly improving its appearance while protecting it from the elements.

Signs you need new gutters

Even if your gutters aren’t completely clogged, there are several signs that it’s time for an upgrade:

Water spills over the edges during rainfall

Sagging or detached gutters

Visible rust or cracks

Leaks near downspouts

Excessive debris buildup that keeps returning

If you notice any of these issues, it’s time to consider professional gutter replacement.

Why choose The Third Estimate

At The Third Estimate, we specialize in professional gutter installation along with high-quality gutter guards. Our team ensures that your new system is installed correctly, protecting your home for years to come. We understand how important it is to safeguard every part of your home, from the roof and gutters to windows and siding, so you can enjoy the seasons without worrying about hidden damage.

Protect your home now

Don’t let falling leaves and winter weather create problems that cost thousands of dollars in repairs. Installing new gutters with gutter guards is a smart investment that protects your home, reduces maintenance and enhances curb appeal.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By The Third Estimate.

Stay festive and roof-safe this holiday season with this guide to holiday lights!

As homeowners decorate for the holidays, many reach for ladders and lights before considering the safety and security of their roofs. Here at The Third Estimate, we want you to be aware of one of the most common mistakes this time of year: attaching lights with nails, screws or staples. While these methods may be easy and convenient, they can compromise roofing and gutter systems, potentially leading to more serious and costly repairs.

Why nails, screws and staples damage your roof

Shingles are designed to shed water and protect your home. When you poke a hole through them, even a tiny one, you break that protective layer. Water can slip in, and once moisture makes its way underneath the shingles, it can lead to leaks, rot and interior damage. What starts as a quick decorating shortcut can easily turn into a costly repair.

How fasteners harm your gutters

Gutters carry water safely away from your home, but when they crack or bend, they cannot do their job. Screws, staples and nails can damage the metal, which leads to poor drainage, ice buildup and sagging sections. A damaged gutter system puts your roof, siding and foundation at risk. All that trouble just for a strand of lights is completely avoidable.

Never tuck lights under shingles

Trying to lift a shingle to slide lights or clips underneath is another common mistake. Shingles are sealed tight for a reason. Once that seal breaks, you open the door for wind-driven rain, ice and debris to get inside. It can also shorten the lifespan of your roof and cause shingles to blow off in strong winds.

The safe and simple solution: Use plastic clips

Plastic holiday light clips are the safest way to hang Christmas lights. They attach securely to the edge of your roof or gutters with no damage at all. These clips keep your lights in place through winter weather and come off easily when the season ends. They are affordable, easy to use and completely roof safe.

Keep your home merry and protected

Decorating for the holidays should be fun and stress-free. By avoiding nails, screws, staples and anything under your shingles, you protect your home from unnecessary damage. Stick with plastic clips, enjoy your beautifully lit home and keep the magic of the season shining bright without any surprise repairs later.

The Third Estimate’s Think Third Patriot Project honored veteran Jared Bzdok, whose home has become a cornerstone of his Copley community.

Every year, The Third Estimate partners with Owens Corning and the Roof Deployment Project to donate a free roof replacement for a veteran through their Think Third Patriot Project. This fall, the honor went to Air Force veteran Jared Bzdok, whose Copley, Ohio, home had long served as a gathering place for the whole neighborhood.

Having served six years in the Air Force and two tours in Iraq dedicated to search-and-rescue operations, Jared is very deserving of this gift. When he arrived home, Jared dedicated his life to his family — his wife, Anita, and their three sons — as well as his community, leading baseball clinics, coaching youth sports and opening his home to local kids for a safe space to play.

Fixing what was left behind

Five years ago, the Bzdoks replaced their roof, but the job wasn’t done very well. The roof was soft, shingles were falling off and moisture was trapped under reused underlayment.

During a local Veterans’ Association lunch, Jared met Tara Colopy, CEO of The Third Estimate, and learned about our Think Third Patriot Project. This program donates a free roof to a veteran or first responder every year. He applied, was selected and our team got to work.

Since the roof was in such poor shape, we had to completely resheet his roof. We rebuilt his roof, installed new gutters and ensured everything was up to code, this time built to last.

A day of community and gratitude

The installation day felt more like a neighborhood block party. Jared grilled burgers, hot dogs and slow-cooked brisket for the crew and everyone who stopped by. Kids played football and soccer while families gathered to celebrate a deserving veteran.

Jared summed it up perfectly: “Most people think of a roof as just, oh, it’s just a roof. But no, it’s like somebody handing you $20,000. It’s amazing.”

In a touching moment, Jared gifted Tara a bottle of Horse Soldier Bourbon, crafted by veterans who served after 9/11. The thoughtfulness behind the gift brought her to tears.

The right way to roof: Why one layer is all you need

title='The right way to roof: Why one layer is all you need'
            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By The Third Estimate.

A strong, healthy roof starts with smart choices, so begin with a clean slate!

When it comes to roofing, cutting corners isn’t saving; it’s setting you back. At The Third Estimate, we believe the smartest investment you can make in your home starts at the top. Installing a single, properly sealed layer of shingles doesn’t just protect your roof; it protects your home, your wallet and your peace of mind. If you’re weighing your options, this is your chance to make the choice that pays off for years to come and invest in the proper single layer of shingles.

So, what’s the problem with layered shingles?

1 – Weight that your roof can’t handle

Roofs are designed to support one layer of shingles, not two (and definitely not three). Adding more weight than it was built for can strain the structure, leading to sagging, cracking or even collapse over time. Think of it like wearing three winter coats in July, heavy, sweaty and totally unnecessary.

2 – You’re trapping problems underneath

When new shingles are laid over old ones, there’s no way to see what’s going on underneath. Leaks, rot, mold and damaged decking all get buried and ignored. By the time you realize something’s wrong, the damage is deep and costly.

3 – It shortens the life of your roof

Shingles are made to lie flat on a smooth surface. Layering over old, curled or damaged shingles means the new layer doesn’t seal properly. That opens the door for wind, rain and ice to do their worst, speeding up wear and tear.

4 – Warranties can get voided

Most manufacturers and roofing companies won’t honor warranties if shingles are improperly installed over an old layer. So, if something fails, guess who’s footing the bill? You!

5 – You’re just delaying the inevitable

A second layer doesn’t solve problems; it hides them. And when the time finally comes to replace everything (because it will come), it’ll cost more to tear off multiple layers and repair the damage underneath.

So, what should you do?

If your home has layered shingles, don’t wait for signs of damage. Have your roof inspected by professionals who can give you a clear picture of what’s going on up there. In many cases, a full tear-off and proper replacement is the smartest (and safest) investment you can make.

Original article source: The Third Estimate

title='The Third Estimate - Smart homeowners ask these 5 questions before hiring a contractor'
            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By The Third Estimate.

Your contractor should offer more than just a good price; they should ensure a smooth project and quality results.

Your home is one of your biggest investments, so choosing someone to work on it can be stressful. Too often, homeowners focus primarily on cost alone, choosing the cheapest or most convenient option. However, here at The Third Estimate, we want you to be empowered to choose the right contractor for your projects with sufficient information and confidence. We’ve prepared five key questions that you should ask potential contractors before making your decisions. After all, a positive contractor-homeowner relationship can bring more than just a job well done; it can also provide peace of mind.

1 - Are you licensed and insured?

This might sound basic, but it is one of the most important questions to ask. A legitimate contractor should be fully licensed to operate in your state and carry both liability and workers’ compensation insurance. That protects you in case something goes wrong, such as damage to your property or a worker getting injured on the job. If a contractor cannot provide proof of insurance or a valid license, that is a red flag and is not worth the risk.

2 - Can you show me recent local work?

Photos are good, but real references are better. A reliable contractor should be able to show you recent jobs they have completed in your area and connect you with past customers if you want to hear about their experience. This gives you a sense of their quality, professionalism and how well they follow through. Bonus points if they have before and after photos, or if you can drive by and see the work for yourself.

3 - What is included in the estimate?

Not all estimates are created equal. Make sure the quote includes more than just the total price. You want to see details like materials being used, labor breakdown, warranty info and what happens if the project takes longer or hits unexpected issues. A vague estimate can lead to surprise costs later. A detailed one shows the contractor knows what they are doing and is being upfront with you from the start.

4 - Who will actually be doing the work?

It’s important to know who will be on your property and doing the work. Some companies use additional trusted professionals as part of their process. It’s okay to ask how the contractor manages their team and who you should contact if you have questions while the project is underway. Having a clear point of contact helps make sure everything goes smoothly.

5 - What happens if something goes wrong?

No one likes to think about problems before they happen, but a good contractor will have a plan in place if something does. Ask how they handle project delays, weather issues, unexpected damage or mistakes. Also, ask what kind of warranty they offer and what it covers. If the answer is vague or they seem annoyed by the question, that is a warning sign. A trustworthy company is transparent about how it protects its customers and its work.

The bottom line

A great contractor should welcome your questions and be happy to walk you through their process. At The Third Estimate, we want homeowners to feel confident, not confused. That is why we give clear, detailed estimates, show you exactly what we see during your inspection and never pressure you into a decision. Whether you hire us or not, we are always happy to help you ask the right questions.

A bio-based breakthrough that breathes new life into aging shingles.

It’s not hail or hurricanes that quietly destroy most roofs, it’s time. The slow, creeping damage from sun, snow and seasonal shifts quietly ages shingles until your once-sturdy roof is brittle, leaky and begging for replacement. But what if you could skip the full tear-off and still protect your home for years to come? That’s the promise behind Eco Revive Roofing from The Third Estimate, a game-changing, eco-friendly treatment that’s rewriting the rules of roof maintenance.

Our solution

Eco Revive Roofing is a 90% bio-based USDA-approved oil solution. When applied, Eco Revive Roofing replenishes vital oils in your shingles, restoring their natural pliability and durability. With this application, you give your roof a fresh start with a clean and powerful formula that’s safe for your home and the environment. This not only extends the life of your roof but also helps reduce unnecessary waste. Every year, millions of tons of roofing materials end up in landfills — by choosing restoration over replacement, you’re making a greener choice for your home and the environment. With Eco Revive Roofing, you get a stronger, longer-lasting roof while reducing your carbon footprint.

We understand that an exterior renovation is a big decision and investment. If you aren’t ready for a complete replacement whether that be due to cost, timing or the disruption possibility. If your roof is compatible with the product, then the Eco Revive Roofing process takes three simple but lasting steps:

Repair: To apply the solution and ensure it will be effective our roofing experts will thoroughly inspect your roof. They’ll repair any damages, ensuring it is in top shape before the rejuvenation begins.

Refresh: We thoroughly clean your roof to remove years of build-up and debris creating a fresh foundation.

Revive: The Eco Revive solution is applied to your roof via a targeted spray. This spray saturated your singles in the essential oils needed for them to protect your home. Our formula brings your shingles back to life and restores their flexibility.

Within hours of completion, your roof will look like new. Our roofing treatment is backed by a five-year warranty that allows you to have peace of mind and be confident with the results.

Signs that Eco Revive Roofing could be for you

Moss or algae growth: Moisture exposure from moss and algae can weaken and age your roof faster.

Withering shingles: Cracked, curling and granules breaking off could mean your shingles are drying out and losing their protective oils.

Faded color: As roofs age, they can lose their coloring and look dull which can be revived.

Water stains or leaks: Stains could mean there are leaks from your roof that need to be fixed.

If your roof shows any of these signs call a roofing professional to inspect your roof. At The Third Estimate, our dedicated roofing professionals will give your roof a 21-point inspection and let you know what your roof needs.

Choose a roofing system that checks all your boxes.

Just as when you’re looking for that special someone to share your life with, choosing a roof is investing in a long-term commitment that requires careful deliberation. You want to ensure that the roofing system you choose is the perfect fit for you — one that is secure, stable and attractive. We at The Third Estimate understand the importance of this decision and have found a perfect match for you: Owens Corning Total Protection Roofing System®.

One system. One brand. Total protection.

The beauty of the Total Protection Roofing System® is how everything works together. Owens Corning took the guesswork out of roofing by offering a full lineup of products that are made to perform as a team. Each part plays a specific role in keeping your home protected from top to bottom. Here’s what makes it so effective.

Seal: Keep moisture out

Water is one of the biggest threats to any roof. If it gets past the surface, it can cause rot, mold and major damage. Owens Corning tackles that risk with a two-part seal that stops moisture before it becomes a problem.

Ice and water barrier: This is placed in the most vulnerable areas of your roof, like valleys, eaves and around chimneys and skylights. It helps prevent leaks caused by ice buildup and heavy rain.

Synthetic underlayment: This sits beneath the shingles to give your roof a second layer of water protection. It helps shed rain and protects the roof deck underneath.

Together, these layers form a powerful barrier that keeps your home dry, no matter the weather.

Defend: Stand strong against the elements

Your roof takes a beating from the sun, wind and rain every day. The Total Protection Roofing System® includes durable components that help your roof handle whatever nature throws at it.

Starter shingles: These create a clean edge and help seal off the roof at points that are most vulnerable to wind.

Shingles: Shingles come in a wide range of colors and styles, giving your home lasting protection and great curb appeal.

Hip and ridge shingles: These add extra strength and a finished look to the most exposed parts of your roof — the peaks and ridges.

Every piece is built to hold strong, resist blow-offs and direct water away from your home.

Breathe: Keep air moving

Ventilation is one of the most overlooked parts of a roofing system, but it plays a huge role in keeping your home healthy and energy efficient. Proper airflow in your attic helps reduce heat and moisture buildup that can lead to mold, ice dams and even higher energy bills.

Intake ventilation: Let fresh, cool air in through the lower parts of your roof.

Exhaust ventilation: Pushes warm, humid air out through the top.

This balanced airflow helps protect your roof and also keeps your attic cooler in the summer and drier in the winter.

Why it all matters

When you choose the Owens Corning Total Protection Roofing System®, you’re choosing more than just a roof. You’re investing in a complete solution that’s designed to perform better, last longer, and look great. Everything works together to protect your home, improve energy efficiency, and give you peace of mind. It’s smart, reliable, and backed by one of the most trusted names in the industry. That’s what makes it such a great choice for homeowners who want quality without compromise.

Learn how The Third Estimate has scaled their company through their prioritization of people and proactive care.

Every month we highlight one of the amazing contractors who is a part of our R-Club program as our Roofer of the Month, and for August that's The Third Estimate in Solon, Ohio! To learn more about how this company takes roofing and customer care to the next level, Alex Tolle sat down with their CEO, Tara Colopy for a quick podcast.

The Third Estimate was founded back in 1996 by Tara’s husband and she took over as CEO about four years ago. The company specializes in roofing, but also provides siding, windows, gutters and other home renovation services to their customers. This expansion of services has led to an increase in growth and recognition for the company, as Tara put it, “We really started focusing heavy on customer service and building our brand in these last four years. And it's really sprung our platform forward. We're a brand that's now recognized not only locally but throughout the state of Ohio and now on a national level.”

As they have grown, Tara has been dedicated to making sure The Third Estimate doesn’t lose track of what has built their success – the people. When it comes to the people on the internal team, Tara spoke a bit about celebrating and uplifting them, sharing, “We have a lot of female leadership, about 90% of our leadership. And we really try to celebrate that. Personally, I try to lift these women up who aren't used to running businesses in a man's world. And I can't tell you the depth of the strength I get to see every day in my staff. It’s amazing.”

As for the people on the other side, their customers, The Third Estimate lives and breathes by the mission of treating customers as the first priority. Tara elaborated, “It's about anticipating needs, not just delivering what they ask for. I preach about being proactive with problem solving and being clear in your communication. If you're having verbal communication, follow up in writing with that customer, build that relationship because that’s what builds loyalty with our customers and has helped us grow.”

Extreme damage can occur if your gutter problems seep indoors.

When was the last time you had your gutters cleaned? It might seem like a small chore but ignoring it could lead to massive problems. Overflowing gutters can cause serious, long-term damage to everything from your foundation to your roof. What starts as a minor blockage can spiral into thousands of dollars in repairs, compromised safety and even health risks. Below, our experts here at The Third Estimate breaks down exactly how clogged gutters can affect every part of your home, and why routine maintenance is more important than you think.

Your foundation takes a hit

Your gutters are designed to carry water away from your home. When they’re clogged with debris, the water spills over the sides where does it go? Right alongside your foundation. This constant water contact can ruin your foundation over time, weakening and cracking it. Once cracks form, water can pour into your basement, causing ongoing damage. A small clog can quickly become a flooded basement situation, which is no minor fix. The damage can work its way deeper into the structure of your home, leading to costly repairs and a constant headache.

Wood rot creeps in

Do you have wood fascia boards or siding? Clogged gutters don’t only spill water close to your foundation; they also cause it to run down the sides of your home, perpetually soaking your wood. Wood repeatedly soaked will grow weak and start to rot. This is not only unsightly; rotting wood is not structurally sound your home is much more susceptible to damage from the outside. Also, it is a pest haven for termites and ants that can infest your home and continue to compromise your property. What seems like a minor gutter issue today could turn into an expensive, time-consuming repair for your home’s exterior.

Your landscaping gets washed away

Think about all the time you’ve spent tending your lawn and installing the perfect flowerbeds. Think about it now being all gone because the water was overflowing your gutters with rain. One strong storm can ruin your landscaping investment and leave you with a wet, soggy mess instead of a beautifully manicured lawn. Clogged gutters are more than just messy nuisances. They can destroy your soil and mulch, deprive your plants of necessary nutrients, kill your plants by waterlogging them create a mosquito nursery in your yard by allowing standing water to accumulate.

Driveway damage starts small… Until it’s not

Your driveway isn’t safe either. When water pools along the edges of your driveway seeps into tiny cracks. When temperatures drop, that water freezes and expands, making those cracks even bigger. Over time, this cycle of freezing and thawing worsens, leading to more severe damage. Before long, you’re facing sinking spots and dips that make your driveway appear uneven. These cracks and fractures compromise its stability a bumpy surface can damage your car’s tires, leading to expensive repairs. A gutter issue can quickly snowball into a costly driveway repair, putting a strain on your wallet.

Water will find a way inside your home

The damage doesn’t stop outside. When gutters overflow, water doesn’t just stay outside. It can pool on your roof with enough buildup, it can force its way under your shingles and into your attic. This water then spreads throughout your home’s structure. The signs of water intrusion might not be immediately obvious, but once they appear, it’s often too late— water stains on ceilings and walls from trapped moisture, peeling paint and warped wallpaper due to excessive humidity hidden mold growth in dark, damp areas, which can be costly and difficult to remove. By the time these issues show, the water has already done substantial damage, both inside and out.

Mold and mildew grow in your walls and ceiling

When gutters overflow and water accumulates where it shouldn’t, it creates the perfect conditions for mold and mildew to grow. This moisture often makes its way into the walls and ceilings of your home, even if you can’t see it. Mold thrives in damp, dark areas the longer it’s left unchecked, the more it spreads. This isn’t just a cosmetic problem — it affects your indoor air quality and could cause significant health issues like allergies or respiratory problems. Removing mold can be expensive, time-consuming hazardous if not handled properly. What started as a small gutter issue could lead to hidden damage in your home, making repairs more costly and complicated than you ever imagined.
