A groundbreaking facility merges cutting-edge research with bold architectural design.

Wichita State University’s Innovation Campus continues to cement its reputation as a hub for research, development and collaboration with the latest addition, Partnership Building 3, showcasing the synergy between functionality and aesthetic sophistication. Housing industry leaders like Airbus and NetApp and featuring materials from Sherwin-Williams, this state-of-the-art facility isn’t just a center for innovation — it’s an architectural statement that redefines modern academic and corporate spaces.

At the heart of its design is a creative use of metal wall panels, chosen to align with the campus’s architectural theme. GLMV Architecture spearheaded the project, leveraging products from the Petersen PAC-CLAD line to craft a structure that stands out while blending seamlessly into its surroundings.

The building was designed to meet the dual demands of technical versatility and visual appeal, with metal panels chosen for their flexibility in achieving this vision.

The design integrates over 12,000 square feet of panels finished in Silver Fluropon® from Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings, a choice that exudes modern elegance. To complement the structure’s sleek aesthetic, 8,500 square feet of Matte Black Fluropon® flat sheets frame the window areas, adding depth and contrast. The strategic use of three distinct panel profiles provides a cohesive yet dynamic visual effect, a hallmark of GLMV Architecture’s forward-thinking approach.

Metal wall panels were not just a practical choice but also a nod to the broader architectural identity of Wichita State’s Innovation Campus. Their inclusion allows Partnership Building 3 to echo the design language of nearby structures while maintaining its own unique character.

This fusion of form and function demonstrates why the facility has quickly become a magnet for cutting-edge research and development. As Wichita State continues to attract top-tier talent and organizations, Partnership Building 3 stands as a testament to how thoughtful design can amplify innovation.

The stadium’s appearance was updated to reflect a color and texture scheme of the Nevada native ecosystem.

Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings offers a wide range of possibilities to make projects present a bold pop of color or sleek design. Using innovative color technology, Sherwin-Williams offers limitless design options to customers looking to make a statement with their metal paneling Floropon® line. One example of clients using the bold color offerings is the recent renovation of the Las Vegas Aviators stadium using Sherwin-Williams products to reflect a color palette reminiscent of the surrounding natural environment!

The new ballpark constructed for the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators team hit a home run with the design and materials specified for the project. Howard Hughes, owner of the Howard Hughes Corporation and the Aviators team, bought the 25,000-acre land in 1952 where the future ballpark would be built. To manifest the 10,000-person capacity ballpark into existence, Devin Norton, a designer with HOK, delivered a design inspired by the corporation owner’s desert and aeronautical history. The base reflects the Red Rock Canyon and Summerlin, Nevada area, while the upper portion of the ballpark uses a mix of steel, glass and metal, similar to aviation materials.

To achieve the desert aesthetic on the base, 31,000 square feet of PAC-CLAD Snap-Clad panels from Petersen Aluminum was installed. The Snap-Clad panels are typically used as roofing panels but were specified for the exterior walls in repeating patterns. In addition, these metal panels are coated in a custom Chocolate Chip Fluropon® finish from Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings, helping to complete the desert landscape look. The stunning Aviators Ballpark is now a cornerstone of downtown Summerlin.

The Seattle Opera at the Center sports a combination of two Sherwin-Williams Fluropon® metal coatings.

The Seattle Opera at the Center is a visually stunning four-story facility designed to act as a center for the performing arts in Seattle, Washington. The building serves as a host for various community activities such as educational programs, musical and artistic performances and an office space. The unique architecture and exterior façade are notable for its geometric patterning, which were designed using Fluropon® “Concord Blue Metallic” and Classic II “Silversmith Metallic” by Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings.

The blue and silver colors present a visual continuity between the new $60 million facility and the existing main performance center. Adding depth and dimension to the exterior, the two layers of panels include the Silversmith solid base level, manufactured by Kingspan Insulated Panels Inc., and the Concord Blue Metallic perforated scrim level, fabricated by Morin Corp., a Kingspan Group company.

“Metal panels are a star feature in the Seattle Opera’s new headquarters, but they play a supporting role in the building’s eye-popping design,” said Brent Trenga, Kingspan’s director of sustainability, North America.

Achieving the desired appearance, Fluropon 70% PVDF resin-based metal coatings offer outstanding color retention and consistency. The reflective metallic coatings enhance the building’s eye-catching aesthetic with a vibrant quality that attracts attention.

Morin Corp.’s Concealed Fastener N-12 metal panels create Opera at the Center’s outermost, perforated surface. The exterior wall panel system was installed by Northshore Exteriors in a staggered pattern to adorn the building, as well as to strategically balance shading, privacy and transparency.

Beneath the perforated blue veil, the foundational layer is composed of clear, insulated glass and the solid, metal panels. Kingspan KarrierRail attachments support the perforated panels, suspending them one foot from the silver-color wall surface revealed underneath. The space between each exterior surface also hides the lighting fixtures that illuminate the façade at night.

During the day, those inside the building enjoy shaded, natural light and views, and those passing by can peek into the costume shop, performance area and other street-level spaces. NBBJ said, “The resulting building brings energy to the street, breaking down the barriers between audience and art. It choreographs the intricate workflows of divas and carpenters, painters and directors, musicians and accountants — all to open up opera to the public.”

Behind the scenes, 44,000 square feet of Kingspan KarrierPanel system finished in Fluropon Silversmith by Steelscape serves as the building’s primary weather barrier and exterior insulation. Fluropon coatings contribute to the façade’s durability, longevity and sustainability. Low-emitting paints and coatings, and thermal comfort were among the points awarded for the project’s LEED Silver certification.

Under the direction of general contractor Lease Crutcher Lewis, Opera at the Center was completed in December 2018. The project was honored by the Associated General Contractors of Washington with a 2019 Build Washington – Construction Award.

Opera at the Center continues Seattle Opera’s commitment to serving the people of the Pacific Northwest with performances of the highest caliber and through innovative educational and engagement programs for all. Each year, more than 95,000 people attend Seattle Opera performances, and more than 400,000 people of all ages are served through school performances, radio broadcasts and more.

Spanning four blocks in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Salesforce Transit Center has become a stunning city landmark.

Spanning 1.2 million square feet, four city blocks, the Salesforce Transit Center has earned the title “Grand Central Station of the West.” This visually and architecturally stunning structure has rightfully earned its place as a San Francisco landmark. This transportation hub stands out among the traditional structures around it, offering a new urban look at the architecture of the future.

Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects to achieve LEED Gold certification, the building’s exterior is enveloped in a gracefully curving cloud of laser-cut metal that elegantly balances natural light and shade. The façade’s lace-like veil features a mathematically derived, continuous nonrepeating Penrose Pattern. Enhancing their delicately patterned, dynamic appearance, Architectural Systems, Inc. (ASI) finished the metal using a pearlescent White Shimmer in Fluropon® Effects Nova by Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings.

Whether selecting neutral, bright or pastel palettes in subtle tones or bold hues, Fluropon Effects Nova coatings deliver vivid sparkle coupled with the color integrity and high performance of other 70 percent PVDF resin-based architectural coatings by Sherwin-Williams. Visible, small, silver metallic flakes in the finish reflect light and impart Nova’s intense sparkle that gleams under the California sun.

The distinctive Penrose Pattern, discovered by mathematical physicist and Oxford University professor Roger Penrose, generates a rhombus-shaped tiled design. The exterior wall cladding is perforated with an artistry rendered, scientifically inspired pattern results in 37 percent of the awning system’s surface remaining open. The small, plentiful openings allow diffused light to fill the interior.

The patterned, perforated, curved awning system’s 140,000 square feet of aluminum panels were fabricated by McClean Iron Works. Approximately 44 feet tall and wrapping the entire four-block Transit Facility, Crown Corr installed both the awning panel system along with 93,700 square feet of aluminum unitized curtainwall. Other manufacturers and materials suppliers involved in creating the innovative façade system included 3A Composites USA, Bonnell Aluminum, Keymark Corporation and Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope.

Achieving the intended aesthetic and reliable performance for the Transit Center’s numerous architectural aluminum products, several 70 percent PVDF Fluropon finishes and colors also were specified. Along with Fluropon Effects Nova in White Shimmer, Fluropon Special in Bone White and Fluropon Classic II in Silversmith and Pewter colors all contributed to the Transit Center’s appeal. The Silversmith and Pewter colors further accentuate the natural beauty of metal in the Fluropon Classic II’s two-coat, light-reflective mica/metallic finishes.

Beyond their eye-catching appearance, Fluropon 70 percent PVDF coatings provide outstanding color and gloss retention, withstand extreme weathering, and resist dirt, stains, chalking and fading. With consideration to the Transit Center’s high-traffic, coastal setting, these coatings also are tested to meet or exceed the industry’s most stringent performance specification, AAMA 2605 for exceptional resistance to UV, humidity and salt spray.

Owned and operated by the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, the Transit Center offers four upper stories, two lower levels and more than 100,000 square feet of shopping and dining spaces, an amphitheater, a children’s play area, a gondola, walking trails and a 5.4-acre rooftop public park.

“When we first addressed the design of the Salesforce Transit Center, we saw that the building had to be both a gateway to San Francisco and a good supportive neighbor to the buildings adjacent to it. We were committed to the idea that this large-scale structure could be both humane and civilized,” said Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects’ co-founder and senior design principal, Fred Clarke, FAIA.

He continued, “From its spacious light-filled Grand Hall to the five-acre Salesforce Park, the building embraces and extends the public realm, welcoming everyone to this new urban center. Its exterior wall and art program symbolizes the innovation and creativity of the Bay Area.”

The architects thoughtfully considered and incorporated sustainable design features throughout the center, such as natural lighting and ventilation, geothermal regulation, and greywater recycling. Further supporting LEED Gold certification through the U.S. Green Building Council, the Transit Center will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly. The annual energy consumption is projected to be 50 percent lower than the 2008 Title 24 Energy Efficiency Standards. Its associated carbon emissions will be reduced by approximately 40 percent.

Bringing these architectural concepts to reality, Webcor Obayashi Joint Ventures served as the project’s construction manager and general contractor. Construction of the new Salesforce Transit Center was necessitated by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which damaged the original Transbay Terminal that opened in 1939. The new project broke ground in 2010.

The Salesforce Transit Center opened in August 2018. It serves a regional hub connecting eight Bay Area counties and the State of California through 11 transit systems: AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, Greyhound, Muni, SamTrans, WestCAT Lynx, Amtrak, Paratransit and future high-speed rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles/Anaheim.

According to Transbay, the Downtown Rail Extension will help remove thousands of commuters from the road, resulting in $360 million in travel time savings, more than $120 million in avoided vehicle operation and maintenance costs, and more than $20 million in benefits from improved safety. Construction of the Transit Center and buildout of the surrounding neighborhood are estimated to generate more than $87 billion in gross regional product and $52 billion in personal income through 2030.

Tips for utilizing 2023's upcoming color trends to create more expressive decorating.

Trends for 2023 have a common theme — people desire to be more expressive in their decorating choices, which you see in their design and color choices. Yet, putting a personal stamp on a home takes a good dose of confidence mixed with a bit of courage.

It is often easier to follow the latest trends than to create a unique scheme. Why not do both?

Here are three tips for using color trends to boost your confidence as you choose the colors for your next decorating, remodeling or new construction project and keep your scheme from looking outdated for years to come.

Tip 1 - You don't have to use the exact color

First, think of color trends like the menu at a favorite restaurant. Browse a color trend palette and choose colors as shown, or substitute similar hues that are lighter, brighter, darker or muted to fit your style. You may select items precisely as presented, or you can make changes so that an item suits your taste. For example, Sherwin-Williams Redend Point is a warm, earthy neutral. It is an intriguing color that may instantly attract you, but neutrals can be tricky. Redend Point has a pink undertone, which works beautifully with many colors, yet you may need one with a different undertone for your home. Use Redend Point as inspiration and find something similar, like Emerging Taupe or Velvety Chestnut, that better harmonizes with your scheme.

Sherwin-Williams' Redend Point

Tip 2 - Trends don't go out of style as quickly as you may think

Many people think that a color trend lasts about a year and that a particular color is no longer in fashion by the following year. That might be what many retailers would like you to think because it can boost sales, but it isn't true. Anything that comes into favor and disappears just as quickly is known as a fad — trends last a minimum of four to seven years.

Popular colors may shift warmer or cooler or become more or less intense in subsequent years, but they don't fall out of favor. For example, gray initially had a cool tone but now has shifted warm. Gray may not be the hottest hue for 2023, but it is still popular. Blue-green is another color that continues to attract our eye, and it comes to the forefront as Vining Ivy, the PPG Color of the Year. It is a deep, shaded, Caribbean aqua with a turquoise undertone that pairs perfectly with deep-toned woods for a home interior or exterior.

PPG's Vining Ivy

Tip 3 - Keep your colors from looking dated by avoiding these combinations

When a once-loved trend feels outdated, it is rarely because of the color but rather the combination. When people bring up past trends, they mention pairs of colors — avocado and gold, gray and mauve, or chocolate brown and aqua. At one time, these colors were everywhere. It isn't the colors that look outdated but the combination that puts a time stamp on the decor.

At one time, a combination of chocolate brown and aqua was so wildly popular that I called it "Choc-qua." Today when you see a room in this combination, you can guess when the homeowner last changed their decor. Had they paired Brown with a color other than aqua, or aqua with gold or navy blue, it would be harder to know when the scheme was created just by the colors alone. Keeping that in mind, the best way to use a trend color is to create a color scheme that differs from the way others use the colors, which is an excellent way to keep your colors from feeling either trendy or outdated. Use this as your opportunity to be more expressive in designing your space.

Whether going bold with Benjamin Moore's Raspberry Blush or Pantone's Viva Magenta (both pictured below) or understated with Behr's Blank Canvas (pictured above), always follow your instincts, and express yourself using colors that you love and those that look best for your home. That's that surefire way to always be in style.

With a beautiful exterior made of metal, glass and wood, it’s easy to see why this Oklahoma barndo stands out from the rest!

Barndominiums, a.k.a. ‘barndos’, have been on the rise across the southern U.S. for quite some time now, and it’s no wonder why. Homeowners who love the sleek and classy look of metal while still maintaining a traditional interior are fawning over the barndo style which exemplifies these ideas. This recently constructed barndominium in Marlow, Oklahoma is a great example of what homeowners love about the barndo style.

This black barndo sits on a whopping 20 acres of land with the home itself being 3,129 square feet. Its metal exterior is complemented well with elements of wood and glass which truly make it a classic barndo. According to Our Barndominium Life™, their coverage of this house went viral with over one million views across their social media platforms.

The California-style barndo offers a variety of amenities including a private entrance, a wine room, three-car garage and a gourmet kitchen. The inside of the home is filled with lovely Carrara marble which is complemented by stained concrete floors and black iron accents. There’s even a touch of elegance with crystal chandeliers as well.

The balanced beauty of the barndo doesn’t end there. This location also has an amazing view of Mt. Scott and gets plenty of natural sunlight with its oversized windows. Although the home is currently off the market, it’s still worth looking at to get inspiration for your next barndo project.
