How a renewed focus on experienced talent and long-term stability is reshaping this company’s recruitment and company culture.

As competition intensifies across the roofing industry, contractors are reevaluating what drives sustainable growth. Increasingly, that conversation is moving away from short-term hiring needs and toward a more deliberate focus on experience; not only as a qualification, but as a stabilizing force within an evolving market. On this Roofer of the Month podcast, Tim Garrison of River City Roofing Co, expressed how that shift is shaping how his company approaches 2026. Rather than hiring to fill isolated roles, the company is expanding its search to bring in experienced professionals across the organization. “We have committed completely to going after anyone in the industry that has absolute experience,” Tim said, describing a strategy aimed at strengthening the business from multiple angles at once.

That approach also reflects a more nuanced view of the labor pool. While parts of the industry, particularly storm-related segments, have faced increased scrutiny, Tim emphasized that experience often exists within those environments, even when reputations vary. “There’s a lot of good guys behind some companies that had a bad rap,” he said, pointing to an opportunity to identify and support skilled individuals whose capabilities may be overlooked.

From there, the strategy extends beyond recruitment into how roles are structured and developed. The company is actively creating pathways for field technicians to move into sales positions, allowing individuals to apply their hands-on knowledge in new ways while continuing to advance their careers. At the same time, hiring efforts are expanding across accounting, project management and sales leadership, reinforcing the need for alignment between field execution and business operations.

That internal alignment is tied closely to a broader commitment to stability. Rather than positioning for private equity acquisition, the company is focused on long-term independence and continuity for both customers and employees. Tim noted, “We are going to be there to compete and to take care of, not only our clients, but our family, which is our employees and their families.”

As hiring strategies continue to evolve, that emphasis on experience, mobility and long-term commitment represents a wider industry shift, one where growth is defined less by rapid expansion and more by the strength, consistency and resilience of the teams behind it.

Explore the whimsical world of William Cahill’s thatch roofs!

There’s something fairytale-like about a roof made of straw or reeds. After Snow White flees from her evil stepmother, she escapes into a forest of friendly creatures who lead her to the seven dwarfs’ hidden woodland cottage: a humble, cozy home topped with a straw roof. As the first Disney feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set the script for the storybook home, likely inspired by “old world,” European charm.

This type of rustic roof made of straw or reeds, called “thatch roofs,” still invokes a sense of enchantment and whimsy today.

One roofer, William Cahill of Galway, Ireland, has made it his mission to preserve the art of thatch roofs. After completing a five-year thatcher apprenticeship contributing to historic projects such as W.B. Yeat’s castle Thoor Ballylee, William left his native Ireland to complete custom thatch roofs across the United States.

Here, for over 30 years, William has worked on prestigious projects, such as the Jamestown Church in the historic Jamestown Settlement in Virginia and the St. Francis of Assisi Chapel in Fountain City, Wisconsin. These works of careful preservation, ranging from English, Irish, African and Asian styles, have earned William plenty of warranted attention, including appearances in notable publications such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Martha Stewart Show.

For the roof thatcher, however, the reward doesn't stem from outside acknowledgement, but from the process itself. “I get great satisfaction out of watching the evolution of a thatch roof from start to finish, and I feel that I work in harmony with nature,” William shares on his website, where he also names his parents as the inspiration to pursue the traditional craft.

With technological advances like artificial intelligence and automation dominating global trends and conversations, it can be comforting and inspiring to see older, quieter marvels persevere through the slow, deliberate work of human hearts and hands. While we don’t live in a fairytale world, we can still appreciate the charms that hard work like William’s brings.

How roof inspections uncover hidden moisture damage, dry rot and failing components before costly repairs.

Many homeowners judge the health of a roof by what they can see from the ground; missing shingles, moss growth or a water stain appearing on the ceiling. Yet roofing professionals, including the team at HER Roofing, say the most significant problems often begin long before those visible warnings appear. Structural damage can develop quietly beneath the surface, which is why thorough roof inspections play such an important role in protecting a home.

Roofing contractors note that modern roofing systems function as layered assemblies where damage frequently starts out of sight. Moisture infiltration, weakened decking and deteriorating structural components can progress gradually, sometimes for months or even years, before homeowners realize something is wrong. By the time visible symptoms appear, the underlying issue may already be well advanced.

Structural roofing problems typically involve conditions that compromise the stability or long-term performance of the roof. These issues may include dry rot forming in decking or rafters, hidden water damage beneath shingles, deteriorated underlayment or roof lines that begin to sag after prolonged moisture exposure. Because these problems originate below the roof’s surface, they rarely become apparent during a quick visual check from the yard.

As a result, roofing professionals approach inspections as a systematic evaluation of the entire roofing system rather than a simple surface review. The process often begins in the attic, where early signs of trouble are frequently visible. Inspectors examine rafters, sheathing and insulation for water staining, sagging materials or other indicators that structural stress may be developing.

From there, contractors may use specialized diagnostic tools to locate hidden moisture that would otherwise go undetected. Moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras and infrared scanning can reveal subtle temperature variations that signal trapped water within roofing materials. Inspectors also evaluate flashing around chimneys, skylights and roof penetrations, areas where leaks commonly originate, while checking decking and underlayment for soft spots, mold or early-stage wood decay.

Environmental conditions can accelerate these risks. In regions with frequent rainfall and persistent humidity, prolonged moisture exposure increases the likelihood of mold growth, wood rot and structural deterioration. These conditions make routine inspections even more important.

By identifying early warning signs before damage spreads, roofing professionals can often prevent more severe structural failures. Detecting moisture intrusion or weakening components early helps reduce repair costs, extend the life of roofing materials and preserve the long-term value of the home.

Learn how the National Association of Home Builders’ 2026 forecast can guide exterior color decisions that prioritize durability and long-term value.

The 2026 colors of the year are more than a style update. They reflect how manufacturers are thinking about performance, longevity and curb appeal in one unified approach. At All Craft Exteriors, those broader industry signals are viewed through a practical lens, especially when helping homeowners make exterior decisions that must hold up in Minnesota’s demanding climate. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the 2026 forecast centers on grounded neutrals, nature-inspired hues and deeper accent tones, with colors designed to feel intentional rather than temporary.

That shift is especially relevant for exterior projects. In many states, siding and roofing are expected to withstand hail, ice and constant freeze–thaw cycles. Unlike interior finishes, these materials are not refreshed every few years. Once installed, they are expected to perform for decades. As a result, color choices must remain visually appealing while standing up to harsh weather and daily exposure.

This reality explains why exterior trends evolve more slowly than interior ones. A roof’s lifespan often outlasts multiple interior redesigns. Siding must resist fading, disguise storm wear and continue to look aesthetically pleasing within the neighborhood long after trend cycles move on. In that context, color forecasts function less as fashion statements and more as indicators of which palettes manufacturers are developing for long-term stability.

The industry response is already visible across major product lines:

LP® SmartSide aligns with the projected warm neutrals

James Hardie® siding supports saturated tones built for fade resistance

Exterior Portfolio® vinyl siding offers broad color flexibility

Steel siding complements cooler, metallic-influenced shades

Shingle selections from GAF and TAMKO® also reflect hues consistent with NAHB’s direction

Ultimately, the most important factor is not trend adoption but durability. Exterior colors should enhance curb appeal, but they must also survive demanding conditions. When selecting materials in a climate where weather is rarely forgiving, long-term performance should help lead design decision.

title='Stronger roofs start with a FORTIFIED system'
            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Jesse Sanchez.

Learn how FORTIFIED roofing systems strengthen homes against wind and water damage by combining enhanced installation methods with high-performance materials.

A roof is designed to protect everything beneath it, yet it is often the most vulnerable part of a home when severe weather strikes. High winds, heavy rain and fast-moving storms can expose weaknesses in roofing systems, allowing water to penetrate beneath shingles and spread damage quickly. Once wind or moisture finds an entry point, the effects can move rapidly through the roof assembly and into the home. Companies such as V.C. Veterans Contracting LLC emphasize building roofing systems that address those vulnerabilities from the start. As severe weather events become more frequent across many parts of the United States, roofing professionals are increasingly looking to construction standards that strengthen the roof as a complete system rather than relying on individual components alone. One approach gaining attention is the FORTIFIED roof program developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS).

The program establishes a nationally recognized construction standard designed to reduce damage from wind and water intrusion. Instead of focusing solely on stronger shingles, the FORTIFIED standard addresses areas where roofing systems most often fail during storms, reinforcing those critical points to improve overall performance.

A key element of the approach involves sealing the roof deck so that water cannot easily enter the structure if shingles are lost during high winds. Reinforcing the roof edges, where wind pressures are typically strongest, further helps protect the system from uplift forces. At the same time, improved attachment methods strengthen how the roofing system connects to the home, creating a more secure assembly capable of withstanding severe weather conditions.

Material selection also supports these performance goals. Duration® shingles with SureNail® technology, for example, are designed to improve fastening strength and wind resistance. WeatherLock® G Ice and Water Barrier can also be applied across the roof deck to create a continuous waterproof layer, helping protect the structure even if shingles are damaged or removed during a storm. When combined with other elements such as underlayment, ventilation and attic insulation, these components contribute to a more integrated roofing system.

Although FORTIFIED roofs are often associated with coastal hurricane zones, interest in the approach is expanding in inland regions as well. Severe thunderstorms, strong winds and tornado activity regularly cause roof failures across central and eastern states. As a result, more homeowners are exploring resilient construction strategies that help reduce storm-related damage.

Ultimately, the concept behind FORTIFIED construction is to strengthen the roof before a storm arrives can significantly reduce the risk of damage, helping protect both the structure and the investment beneath it.

The Drift Solar Snow Fence provides essential safety for residential solar projects.

The United States is experiencing an unprecedented boom in residential solar projects, with homeowners across the nation turning to solar energy to power their lives. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, a new solar project was installed every 59 seconds in 2025, bringing the total number of solar energy systems in the U.S. to nearly 6 million — Enough to power 47 million households. By 2030, it’s projected that 11% of American homes will feature solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on their roofs.

As the number of solar installations continues to climb, it is critical for architects, specifiers, contractors and roofing professionals to proactively plan for the unique challenges these systems present — Particularly in regions prone to winter weather. One significant concern is the rapid warming of solar panels after a snowfall, which causes snow to slide quickly down roof surfaces. Without proper snow retention, this can result in avalanches of snow and ice, putting people, property and landscaping below at risk.

Solar snowfall solution

To address this issue, Rocky Mountain Snow Guards offers the Drift Solar Aluminum 4-pipe fence-style snow guard system. Specifically engineered for installation below solar panels, this innovative system features a 12-inch-tall snow fence that acts as a catch basin, holding snow in place until it melts gradually. This prevents dangerous, sudden releases of snow, safeguarding both residents and property.

The Drift Solar Snow Fence is compatible with both new construction and retrofit roof applications. Its robust design calls for the brackets to be bolted directly to the roof support structure flush at the eave, with the tubing side facing downslope — A reversed installation compared to traditional snow fence systems. Each bracket is anchored with five structural lag bolts, ensuring long-lasting performance and reliability.
Learn how metal roofing types compare in durability, cost and design to make a confident, long-term investment in your home.

Metal roofing has moved well beyond its association with barns and industrial buildings, emerging as a versatile option for residential homes. Companies like Mountaintop Metal Roofing highlight how today’s systems offer a broad range of styles, materials and performance benefits, making them an increasingly attractive alternative to traditional asphalt shingles. As interest grows, understanding the differences between metal roofing types has become essential for homeowners evaluating long-term value.

At the core of that decision is material selection. Metal roofs are commonly manufactured from aluminum, steel, copper and zinc, each bringing distinct performance characteristics. Aluminum is valued for its corrosion resistance, particularly in humid environments, while steel remains a cost-effective and widely available option. Copper and zinc, though positioned at a higher price point, are known for their longevity and the protective patinas they develop over time.

Beyond material, profile design plays a critical role in both performance and appearance. Standing seam roofing remains one of the most widely used systems, defined by vertical panels and concealed fasteners that create a watertight barrier. This design not only enhances weather resistance but also delivers a clean, modern aesthetic. When properly installed, standing seam systems can perform for more than 50 years with minimal maintenance.

For homeowners seeking a more traditional look, metal shingles and shake profiles offer a familiar alternative. Designed to replicate the appearance of asphalt shingles or cedar shakes, these systems provide enhanced resistance to wind, fire and moisture while blending seamlessly into established neighborhoods.

Corrugated metal roofing introduces a more utilitarian option, often used for accent applications or cost-sensitive projects. Its wave-like profile adds structural strength to lightweight panels, though the use of exposed fasteners may require periodic maintenance over time.

When compared to asphalt shingles, metal roofing systems consistently deliver longer service life, improved durability and reduced maintenance demands. While the upfront investment is typically higher, the extended lifespan, often ranging from 40 to 70 years or more, can translate into stronger long-term value.

Ultimately, selecting the right metal roof comes down to aligning budget, climate conditions and design preferences. By working with a qualified contractor, homeowners can ensure the chosen system meets both structural requirements and long-term performance expectations.
